Q:
The heavy snows in the North East have made me think of a good question. Do you think it should be legal to feed wild deer, and supplement their intake so that the herd can better survive the winter? I know here in NY it is illegal, but i think it would do more good than harm. what are your thoughts on this issue?

Most states say no because of CWD. If your state doesn't have CWD then I don't see the problem. The day it is found, from what I have read, that feeding should stop. Feeding apparently (I have no real evidence other than the "experts") spreads the disease easier.

this is very true, and here in NY CWD was only found in a couple of very concentrated cases either 4 or 5 years ago. NY has had a CWD program in effect for the past few years, and if i am not mistaken the herd has been entirely CWD free for at least the past 2 or 3 years.

well feeding in new york was legal a few years ago but as you know it is no longer permitted due to C.W.D. . the trouble with feeding other than CWD is that a lot of people dont due it right . you have to start doing it early enough in the year so the deer's stomach bacteria does not switch over to the type that helps them break down the heavier woody browse that they eat in the winter months . a deer can literally die of starvation with a belly full of corn if it has switched to a woody browse bacteria .
secondly to many people start out feeding deer with good intentions of keeping them healthy , but find out holy smokes these things eat a lot , and i cant afford to feed this many so they stop . which is a death sentence to them now that they are snowed in to an area they normally wouldent yard in that does not have enough natural browse to get them through the winter .
Or in the case of many hunting clubs around here that did feed when it was legal , but stopped when NY said to . guess what no one sent the memo to the deer and they came to these feeding sights like they always did that had been over browsed for decades ,got snowed in for the winter and died off in huge numbers . when no one brought in the bales of hay and buckets of corn to them . do the deer a favor let mother nature take care of them

Aside from the C.W.D. problem, I don't think it is a good idea to feed deer, especially if the area is heavily populated with deer. Feeding seems to be the humane thing to do, but it only aggravates the overpopulation problem.

Bad idea, in Michigan we have too many deer. Also, the deer will take care of themselves, the healthy ones will survive and have healthy young. The unhealthy ones wont. Yes the deer population may be hurt for a year, but unless the animal is threatened or endangered I don't see any reason to intervene.

Feeding deer is plain stupid. Aside from the CWD concerns, a harsh winter is a natural thing that deer herds have been dealing with for millennia. The deer it kills are generally the weakest. Natural die offs are necessary and good for the herd, not to mention the fact that NY doesn't need more deer. I understand that some hunters want a lot of deer, and you can get yourself that, but it will be a lot of skinny wimpy deer. No one wants that. Deer populations aren't here to be numerous for our success. They are here to be part of the natural balance of the ecosystem, not to become subjects of human will, or agriculture. They are wild animals. Let's leave them that way.

One of the adverse effects of feeding, aside from the CWD, is the easy of severe damage by predators. When all of the local deer gather daily in the same spot, the predator find easy pickings.

I think you will find that the DNR in all states will discourage feeding of deer because of the risk of spreading disease. Cattle and sheep survive only because they are innoculated. Deer can be wiped out by a feeding. CWD is only one of the many fatal diseases they can pass this way. Winter feeding can help but I recommend alphalpha hay spread over a long range as far superior to corn.

Corn isn't the best for deer anyways. I also live in NY and used to feed them but once it became illegal I stopped and made a food plot with winter plant mixes in it.

I agree with all of you that feeding is a bad idea for the health of the herd, but I just wanted to see if anyone would bring up a good counter argument, based on evidence. Thanks for all the input, and the good pointers that I can pass on to anyone arguing we should legally feed deer again in NY. MPN: what part of NY do you live in and what plant types have you found work best year round for your food plots? Good hunting everyone!

I'm in Allegany County and for the plants in my food plots, well I have one food plot that is just clover and brassicas for summer feeding and the other I plant winter brassicas and some other plant, whose name is escaping me, that produces a bulb that the deer dig up in the winter and eat right up.
