Absolutley put the bait out for at least a few days before hunting the site. Also it works well if you extend the bait in a straight line away from a tree or obstacle that blocks a deers view. keeping the obstacle between the bait and your blind. This way if you are in your blind and a deer comes in to feed its view is obstructed but his body will be broadside and visible.
Start them out a week before the "hunt to give the deer time to find them. Add more the days you'll be hunting.
To Justin D , It's no different than using corn or any other "food" attractant.
Good Luck and Good Hunting !
Start baiting as soon as it is legal to in your area and then just continuously add whenever the bait is running low. With food there, it shouldn't do much to scare away the deer.
If it is legal where you are, put them out before. This will give the deer some time to find the apples. Then they will know where the apples are, and will come back for more! Good Luck!!
