OK, guys, this business of it's OK to let a deer smell you pee-ing, chewing tobacco, passing gas, etc, etc, is starting to get to me. I got an idea, hunt the wind in reverse! pee your pants and be slobbering tobacco and walk downwind the deer will be smelling all that and come running! Anybody else starting to think this is just getting ignorant besides me?????????

You forgot the coyote scent drag and wolf pee on your boots. You're probably right Fudd, but we need something to talk about to mix things up once in a while. I got a good laugh out of your idea to hunt the wind in reverse. We could do an experiment to see how many things a hunter could do wrong and still get a deer. I wonder if the deer would prefer Hank Williams or Hank Jr. I'll try both & see which one brings them in.
Im sure deer just are born with a sence that say hey i smell human piss or man that is tobacco from a cig or cigar... I know what it is. when we die we come back as deer so we as deer are able to know exactly what HUMAN piss smells like compaired to other animals piss.... I do not think that all the time pissing and smoking in stands are going to spook the deer you always hear of people smoking in stands chewing in stands and pissingout of stands me included and had a nice doe come 20 yards in front of the stand not 10 minutes after I stood up and pissed off the stand. so as i said I dont believe that just because people do those things in stands does not mean they will never get a deer. you can say all you want about scent and understand that it is important to get rid of scent but in a few and far between cases scent from those things can attrack a deer just my opinion
simply put " why risk spooking deer" yeah there are cases of people pissing and deer coming in to check it out of curiosity but whose to say that same smell didnt scare 20 other deer away. i d rather have a deer think there was not a thing changed since they were last there and think that i out smarted the deer using travel patterns and habits.. Also if you piss and miss u just made that deer identify that smell with a hunter, and i should almost thank you for allowing that deer to live to ripe old age and wonder under my stand some day as i do not piss anywhere near my stands.

Yeah seriously why risk spooking them? For all you know you could miss a great deer because you just peed or spit.
well i can agree to a point with you elmer . but my uncle has killed more deer than any one i know , during the first gulf war he shot his one hundredth deer . and 99.9 percent of them were shot on the ground still hunting, with a Newport cigarette hanging out of his face . i have no idea what his tally is now but its up there . i no longer smoke but i have shot plenty of bucks with a cigarette in my mouth while still hunting as well . some scents dont bother deer as much as you think .

It should be obvious to everyone that making noise and stink is not the way to keep the deer relaxed, but I do think some guys are getting neurotic in their frenzy to go NINJA on the deer. One guy I know sprays himself down every time he leaves the cabin. But he also brought his DOG to camp, and got mad when I asked him to leave it home next time!
I think there's common sense to minimizing your odor, but there's limits to what I'm going to do.
As my hunting buddy says, it's a HOBBY.
To each their own. If hunters want to spend hundreds of dollars in scent protection stuff, then go ahead and have at it if it makes you feel more confident. Do I think it is necessary? Absolutely not! What do you think our ancestors did before good hygene techniques and scent protection technology existed? Do other top predators have the luxury of scent protection? No, and they need to get much closer to their prey to make a kill than any human with a gun or bow. Great hunters play the wind, period.
