The most trustworthy rifle right out of the box in my opinion is the Remington 700 in 25-06 and especially the 30-06!

I agree with the Remington 700 in 30-06. Also with the Ruger M77. Depends on terrain also. If you are in a wooded area you might even want to try the Marlin 336 Lever Action in a 30-30. Its a good gun and with a shorter barrel would be easier to pack in the woods! Still gives a good bit of knockdown power too! If your state allows that weapon's magazine capacity.

If you had to ask, you better go with the .30-06....

buckboynick, I love my '06 but also my .35 Rem. At close range (25-75yds) the .35 is better IMO. After that I like my savage 06.

Its all about opinion. I like anything fomr a .243 to a .300. A .270 is probably my favorite. Just shoot different calibers and different brands and see what suits you.

My first choice for deer is a Winchester Model 70 in 6.5x55mm Swedish Mauser. With a 140 gr. bullet, it has a little more muscle than the .243 Win. with about the same recoil.

If your shooting more open area then a 270, for thick stuff a marlin 336 30-30 'brush gun' or winchester 94.

In places that are not infested with dangerous wild animals, the 7mm Remington Magnum is hard to beat.
