The XL7 is not only the cheapest real rifle I know of, it's more accurate than most. It won't win any beauty contests, it won't gain any real value, but it won't disappoint any serious rifleman. It has some of the best features from the other rifles all in one. One being a button rifled barrel. None of that hammer forged crap. I'm talking to you, Remington. If a hammer forged barrel is good enough, then why don't any competitive shooters use them?

The STEVENS model 200 is another reasonable priced rifle. You can pick one up for under $400

In todays market I'd go with the XL7 for price and effectiveness.

Mossburg too makes a cheap bolt action that is said to be decent. Try Dick's or WalMart if the mom and pop shops are too expensive. Dicks often has Savage package guns on sale. I watch the classifieds too.

try gun shows, i bought a remington 700 adl at the last one for $300, i was offered a savage 110 for $300, and a mossberg for $225 so go take a look at a gun show and see what you can find.

shane - I suspect custom barrel makers don't use hammer forging because of the cost of the equipment. The companies that use hammer forging (add Winchester, Sako, and others) have sub-MOA accurate rifles. Good enough for hunting. Could they get batter accuracy and consistency from hammer forging? Possibly so, but at a higher cost. Not all the custom button-rifled and cut barrels get the go ahead either.

There is a big difference between a Remington mass produced bottom line boosting hammer forged barrel and a Sako hammer forged barrel. All I know is that Savage button rifles, makes cheaper rifles, and shoots with or out-shoots the competition.

Shane, but they're so damn ugly! I'm a Savage owner and fan, fashion be damned. I am looking to buy a 14 or 114 so i can own a decent looking Savage rifle.

Go check out the Savage website. They have changed the lines of a lot of the synthetic stocks from the ones that gave them the ugly reputation. If you don't like the looks of Savages, maybe check out the XL7. All the best features of them, and available in walnut and laminated stocks. You might think they're ugly too, though. Not the prettiest guns, but good lines. Nothing weird.

I love a pretty gun more than your average dude, but function trumps form for me in hunting rifles, and man do they function. You will kill the beast in a precise manner before it gets a chance to judge the looks of your piece.

Check out an H&R Handi-Rifle: http://www.hr1871.com/Firearms/Rifles/handiRifle.asp

and

http://www.ableammo.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=85785

Good luck finding something in stock this time of year. Most places are running their inventory down. But if you can find one you should be able to pick one up for about $200.00.

This Rossi you could probably pick up for under $200.00 You wouldn't HAVE to put a scope on it if you didn't have the money.
