Q:
Got a question for you guys. F&S said last month or this month that October 31st was one of the days that you needed to be out in the woods for whitetail. In my little corner of the world I did not see a single deer until yesterday 11-3-09. With that being said here in NE Indiana farmers are about 2-3 weeks behind on cutting crops due to the amount of rain that we have been seeing here. Did you go out and see anything or were you like me? Do you take stock in what a magazine says or is it what is happening on your land that makes you sit in the woods? How about the lunar cycles and times? Just curious.

I sat a tree stand that evening and saw zip. The wind howled to the point that a herd of elephants could have held a track meet and you would not have heard them.
Forgot to add, it was also a full moon, which didn't help any.
full moons before and after the rut are hard to get excited about. during the rut though, i think you have to be in stand no matter what. i do take stock in the mags but also understand that what is true for one area may not be right for another. in the area of ky that i hunt, the deer pop is not so high that you always know what stage of the rut the deer are actually in. if i want to hunt though, i hunt no matter the moon phase, i don't like hunting in high wind though, very frustrating.
With lunar cycles for the most part I find them accurate. However, the deer could be very active in the corn and you never lay eyes on them. For example My neighbor ran his head rows on the corn, I saw about 25 last night after seeing nothing the last three times hunting, but hearing them move in the corn. The deer are still there, but they take full advantage of the easy meals and great cover.
I am with you on this whole 31Oct 1Nov was great hunting. I did not see a thing until I left the woods and it was too late to shoot. They were all over the field after sunset and the moon was bright on them, but I was not taking a chance of getting caught shooting after the legal time. I have not see a deer since. My GPS has a function for Hunt/Fish times and quality and I rely on it more than a magazine. It is more accurate for me.
take a look at my profile pic. this monster was shot a seven oclock a.m. on halloween. I read field and streams seven days you must be in the woods. I also read their tip about using a sock full of baking soda to help control my scent. this was a 7 pointer that dressed out at 207 lbs. and in mass. this is considered a big deer.

The crops next to my hunting spot are still in too. The deer trails look like cattle trails going in and out of the corn and soybean fields. I saw a doe and a 6pt. yesterday about 8am. It was a full moon last night too. I definitely think a new moon during this time of the year is great for hunting, but w/ my work sched. I gotta' go whenever I can.
They are waay late on cutting the corn here too. I sat on stand all day the 31st it was rainey at times and saw nothing But have seen deer moving in the past when field and stream predicted the peak days. Of course weather has alot to do with it but its fun to plan those days every year and it helps keep me in the stand longer because field and stream told me to go.
I was out in MN that night. Wind died down to almost nothing by dark. Deer were moving though. Saw 5 does and 3 bucks. One really large buck but it stayed about 80 yards out the entire time.
Didnt see anything the 31st but heard plenty eating the acorns under some heavy cover, and i shot 2 the 30th
October 31st was pretty stormy and windy...didn't get a buck, but I bagged a nice jake turkey. November 1st, however, was the epitomy of perfect conditions for hunting (a high pressure system just moved in, nearly full moon was rising in the early evening, wind was calm, temperature was about 40, and the rut had just started). I called two of my buddies in NY that night and both of them bagged nice bucks. I was so jealous! This "no hunting on Sundays" law in PA needs to go!
i saw 3 does and 20 turkeys.next day i saw 7 does and like 5 turkeys..waited for a buck tho
my buddie shot at 2 of the does and missed both of em.my dads buddie gotta turkey to.
I got lots of game camera footage 11/1 of PA bucks around my stand safe and sound at 1pm 3pm etc
