You should start finding buck sign now or in a few days. I live in NC and know people who have found scrapes and other sign last week. As for the actual rut, it should start in November.
You research your areas past average date for fawn drop. then count back the gestation period = peak rut. does't hurt to learn all you can on fall deer behavior any way you can, I sure try to. Most states game and fish depts keep records of past ruts, past fawn drops, fat levels and other info that a hunter can use to better hunt whitetails. I NEVER stop studing whitetails.
in WNC the pre rut should start in about 4 days
early nov. it might start a little early this year cause we just had that cold snap
most N.C. outdoorsmen probably don’t know the state has four “rut” periods, stretching from late October to the first week of December.
i got this from www.northcarolinasportsman.com/details
I live in maine and the rut here has just started but you will be able to tell if you start to find alot of rubs and buck porins around your area
I hunt in N.C. from the coast to the high mtns. (above 4,500 feet) and have found that the best time in the piedmont to east is between the last week or Oct. and the second week or Nov. In the higher mtns., I find the peak to be Thanksgiving weekish which is mid-later Nov. By the end of the first week or gun season in the piedmont (Thanksgiving week generally), things are slowing down. I hunted last weekend in the piedmont and arrowed a buck that came in following two does about 20 minutes behind them. On Halloween weekend, they're likely to be 30 seconds behind them if not chasing. By mid-Nov., they're back in the deep woods ordering room service and smoking cigarettes.
