Lucky for you, topography doesn't change very much. The old topo maps should be fairly accurate even though they're old. However, if you really want to check out a hunting area, I would suggest downloading Google Earth. It's a free download that allows you to view ariel photos of the landscape, as well as change the viewing angle so you see a 3D image of the landscape! It is a scouting tool every hunter should have. Check it out at: http://earth.google.com/
I use google earth myself. You can try a similar version just by going to the google homepage and putting in the adress or town find the closest road then you can choose the satelite option and I believe there is a topo selection as well. Not as in depth as actual google earth!
Last year I gave my grandfather a laminated aerial phot map of our families property. I researched the land plots and made some calls and emails to the county. The county put me in contact with a different department and I was able to buy one from the county. It was the best gift that I have ever given.
If you are just looking for a topo map, go ahead and print an old one. There is little to no difference. Most of the 7.5 minute series maps that are out there are over 25 years old.
