Q:
This is an important question for me. I have for awhile now, wanted to ask a landowner if I could get permission to hunt their land. I have always chickened out! I know the worst thing they could possibly say is "no", but I still dont ask. Tonight on my way home from a little small game hunting, I passed the land again and seen one of the biggest bucks I have seen in a long time. That was the clencher! I want to ask! But Im not sure on how to do it. Do I just come out and ask? do I butter them up/ Im not real good at this type of stuff, so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Go knock on his door and tell him about yourself, your situation and ask if he would allow you to hunt his land. Explain that you'll do it safely and offer him some of the meat if he wants it.

Just ask. It's to late to butter him up, as in doing work around his place, so you may need to offer money on a per day basis. You should have started working this guy long ago.

I would keep it simple. Introduce yourself, explain what you want, and ask permission to hunt his land. You risk him seeing right through you if you try to butter him up too much.

Knock on the door, Introduce yourself, Offer your hand to shake. Tell him you're a safe and responsible hunter, and that you've seen a buck on his land you'd like to hunt. Offer to shoot does for him and help with chores, share the meat, etc. If he says no, you did all you could. I bet he say's ok. If he says no, offer your phone number in case he changes his mind. Thank him and be on your way. Good Luck. lifes to short not to ask. Same with women you like.

I always offer to help work the land in exchange for hunting privileges, then land owners usually say no work needed just dont abuse the property.

Good things come to those who ask, rarely to those that don't. Not any worse than asking a cute girl out on a date. Sometimes they are just waiting to be asked.

Go and ask. Go in regular clothes. I have found by asking more often people dont mind. Just be respectfull and thankfull. When you get one its a nice gesture to offer up a few nice steaks from the butcher. If they dont like deer give them some cow to show your appreciation. Just dont shoot one of theirs!

jordjohn hit it right on the head. Most of the effort of getting permission is just building up the nerve to ask. Also offer to do yard work and help out around their home. This goes a long way, have had landowners turn down money from other people because my dad and I treat them well.

Steve182 pegged it! Go talk to the man just like you would like to be talked to, shake the mans hand and look him in the eye. Don't run on at the mouth feeling like you have to fill up any pause in the conversation, it takes a bit to make up your mind, even longer if a hunter has already screwed him over.
He'll tell you his rules, follow them! and don't tell anyone you are hunting there! The most negitive comments i've heard while asking permission is that the hunter left a mess, modafied the place without asking, left the gates open, or brought more people onto the place. Or doing anything he don't like, after he tells you, stop by and check with him through the season to make sure everything is ok. I don't think you have to offer to work for the guy or kiss his butt, but "Do" offer some of your take, and treat the place better then you would your own. Show respect and you will receive it! Also people have kids, grandkids, don't get upset if they say _____ hunts, so I can't let you. Thank them, make some small talk and leave. I have got alot of places by saying that I take my kids hunting and I'm looking for a place that I don't have to worry about a bunch of idiots around who are unsafe, and I'm just looking for a place I don't have to worry others!
Good Luck
