If you can find one, try to get a .22 mag/20 gauge over and under. It's like bringing 2 guns into the woods at once (which comes in handy for small game!), both caliburs are great youth choices, and both can take any small game in north america. I can't count the number of times I've had a shotgun in the woods and wished I had my .22 and vice versa...it's a superb choice, again, if you can find one.

all of the above are great options, i kind of like the combo idea bioguy had if it isn't too heavy. Never really messed with over/under 's. I have heard good things from my uncle about the rossi trifecta. he bought one for my little cousin.

To elaborate on what kolbster said, I would go with the rossi he is talking about. It is called the trifecta and comes with a .22, .243, and either a .410 or 20 gauge barrel. Since he is 11, I would find the one with the .410 barrel. They are nice guns.

When I was that young My grampa got me a Rossi with interchangeable .22 and 20 gauge barrels. I used it for anything from squirrels to groundhogs and turkeys.

If you go with a rifle a .22 is all you should need. there are alot of makes and modles it should be easy to find one that fits your needs also the ammo is very affordable. If you chose a shotgun I woul personaly go with a 20ga.

Dbetzner is right 20guage has lower recoil your son will we able to handle while still getting him used to the kick if he decides to go to bigger calibers later in life, plus ammos a heck of a lot cheaper then all other guages besides the 12 guage which would probably be way to much kick for him

It's time for a .22. I saw a previously-owned (perfect condition) stainless 10-22 in a gunshop for $215.
