Q:
We had a question the other day about when deer lose their antlers. My response was that I'd never seen one with antlers in March. My picture is of a small moose but he has his antlers still and the picture was taken yesterday. Guess I'm wrong once again. Check it out on my profile.

i used to work for C.V. Whitney as equipment operator on his land in the adirondacks . i have seen one buck at his main camp hold half his rack till the end of march ,and one hold it till the 2nd of may . is seemed like the new antler literally pushed the old one off their darn head's like a kids tooth .

I too have seen bucks with their racks in march. Two years ago I had 5 or 6 bucks cross a field I had set up in to turkey hunt, one had no horns one had both sides and the others had one side. All were young bucks spikes,4 and 6 pointers.I would guess 1.5 and 2.5 year olds. This was in Ga. in mid march.

I have seen antlers on whitetails well into March. I have heard some deer may keep their antlers all summer but I'm not sure if that is true. I know I have never seen it.

i've saw both mule deer and whitetails still carrying their head gear this weekend. one whitetail was a particularly nice 5x5.
