Q:
A Cape Breton, NS woman is in critial condition this morning, after 2 coyotes viscously bit her numerous times while she was walking the famous "Sky Line Trail" system. One coyote was tracked and shot dead, the other escaped.Early testing said the animal was fully grown and health. Local coyotes are becoming bolder and bolder, taking pets in our backyards, causing losses to sheep and poultry farmers and in rare cases attacking people. Are they getting braver where you are?Do you do anything to slow the number of yotes in your area(trap, snare or hunt)?

That's a sad, tragic story.

Buckhunter - can you believe some of the responses in that blog? Sounds like they have an ample supply of antis up there too.

Let the anti's walk the trail, that might do some good;. seriously though if it's legal go ahead and shoot 'em. Snares may get your pets.

Cooner...I couldn't help but laugh when I read your post...reminded me of something my father would say. I miss home :-)

There really isn't all that much you can do about coyotes as far as localized management is concerned. You can kill as many as you want, but they're still going to keep on coming back. They are prolific breeders, fantastic survivors, and they can make some pretty large movements over a landscape (last year one with a GPS collar went from Oneonta NY, to Northeast PA where it was recaptured by a trapper). One of the best ways to get rid of them is to get rid of their food...and since they are generalists/scavengers...that's a pretty difficult task to accomplish.

An attack like this is a VERY RARE occurance, but since there was a fatality it gets a lot of press. I'm sure this sounds like a familiar situation to all of the gun owners out there, since the same thing happens when a gun is involved in a fatality. The press chews up the facts and spits out an article of speculation and half truths, and anyone who is emotionally involved tries to start a movement based on their interpretation. Does one fatal coyote attack justify an all out war on coyotes? Does one gun fatality justify an all out war on gun ownership? Same concept, so just think about it.

I have heard of people being attacked by coyotes, including a hunter siting on a pail at the edge of a corn field. But this is the first I have heard of an adult fatality. Truly unfortunate. A terrible way to die.

Interesting that Elmer Fudd's link is the only news article or report that I have seen or heard.

Cooner, I agree with you kill as many as you can as often as you can, because you will never run out of 'em!

I had a coyote by my house (maybe 15 feet away) when I stepped outside to tinkle one night. Little sh*t growled at me. . . then I tinkled myself

I shoot them every chance I get. I think the population would go down a lot if trappers were paid a fair price for the hides.
