Q:
Today is my birthday. I think I will use the money my generous friends and family gave me to purchase a Ruger 10/22. Does anyone have any advice as to which upgrades to buy to make it a very accurate squirrel/small game rifle? Bull barrels? Thumbhole stocks? Thanks

I'd listen to Goose. A 10/22 is already pretty accurate, some models more than others. Instead of upgrading a gun that's already pretty good, spend the money on a good scope for it. If you feel the need for a variable on a .22lr get a 2-7, but you are better off getting the best fixed 4x you can afford, as it will be a better scope than any variable at a similar price.

Right out of the box is great, that is why people love buying these guns. Wait until after you have shot it a bit before wanting to spend more money on bells and whistles (I doubt you will need to other than a scope). I would buy extra clips, I have a 25 round clip and love it.

Happy Birthday! My Great Uncle George gave me a Ruger 10/22 for my 12th birthday. Never did a thing to it besides clean it and feed it lot of ammo. It came w/a 2x scope on it though. So that would be my only advice, is put a cheap, low power scope on it and blast away. Great first gun!

thanks everyone. my 17th birthday and i already own 4 guns, mosin-nagant, savage 110, winchester 270 pump, and a remington 597. the remington 597 is remingtons answer to the 10/22, but i am very disappointed. it jams and feels very cheap. i hate synthetic stocks! and the 10/22 has many more custom parts available if i ever have to much money to blow.

bull barrels and thumbhole stocks are great, they make the gun look awesome. but not really practical for hunting they make the gun heavy.

DON'T SKIMP ON THE SCOPE OR SCOPE MOUNTS
DON'T SKIMP ON THE SCOPE OR SCOPE MOUNTS
DON'T SKIMP ON THE SCOPE OR SCOPE MOUNTS

With any rifle this is as crucial as the three most important points of realestate. Location, location, location.

Get my point?

Get a good scope and mounts!

Happy birthday! I have a 10-22 that is all tricked out out with custom barrel, Volquartsen trigger, etc, etc. My Dad has one (all stock) he bought for $75 that looks like it fought every battle since Bunker Hill. It shoots about as well as mine. So, the moral of the story would be first see how the one you get shoots before you drop $$$ on making a tack driver. It might already be one.
