Q:
In VT the laws says that I can have a bag limit of 4 daily and 8 possession does that mean I can shoot as many as I want as long as I don't have 8 in my possession?

Are you asking would it be ethical?

It means you can be a gentleman and carry your wife's 4 squirrels while you carry your own 4 (and she had better accompany you to support that claim), or you can have yesterday's 4 in the ice chest at camp while you return to your camp or cabin with today's 4. Be nice to the game warden; he has a thankless job!

Okay, in most cases I'm pretty critical of guys who get on here with regulations questions. Usually they're too lazy or stupid to read them themselves. They shouldn't have a gun in the field in either case. However, in this instance, I'll render some sympathy. A lot of regs are not very clear about the difference between bag and possession limits. In a nutshell (pardon the pun), your daily bag limit is usually the number of squirrels PER DAY you can have on your person in the field (in the game bag) or in transport to your place of residence (either permanent or temporary [camper, motel room, etc.]). The possession limit is the number of squirrels you can retain at your residence AT ANY TIME. You cannot transport more than your possession limit from a residence in one jurisdiction to a residence in another jurisdiction. Hope this is clearer than mud.

Here's a couple of examples that might make it clearer: You can shoot four squirrels in the field and then must stop hunting them for the day. If you had four more squirrels at home in the fridge, you're done for the season - or until you eat some of them. If there were no squirrels at home, I suppose you could drop the four off and head back out again to get four more. Technically, however, this is not legal.

If you have a regulation question you might want to call your states department of natural resourses or the local game warden. They should be happy to answer your questions because that shows that there are responsible hunters out there. Every state has different laws and restrictions. Call for clarification, that is what they are there for. You don't want to say I didn't know when the game warden shows up to fine you!

Kodnocker's advice is best. For example, a camper mounted on a pickup may not be classified as a "residence" in some jurisdictions.

It means you can take 4 daily and may not have more than 8 in your freezer or whatever. Also check your laws because sometimes possesio limit is the amount of game you can take in a 2 week period. Hope this helps.

ALWAYS check with Fish & Game if you are not sure, it's much better than losing your right to hunt, and whatever penalties they will put upon you, like loseing you gun, the game and your vehicle. IT DOES HAPPEN!

No. it means that you can shoot 8 total. so if you shoot your limit of 4 a day for 2 days then your done. or you can do 2 a day for 4 days etc. Good question the wording of that is pretty debate able.

That's 4 in one day with 4 in the freezer. If you eat 2 for dinner you can bag 2 in the morning, now if you have 2 for lunch you may want go out and bag 2 more.

While your out get some tums,I think you should have spent more time preparing those last two.
