What is the best call, gun, and technique for hunting crows? I've gone before but only got one. Also, would hunting out of a ditch aiming at a big grass field be a good place to go?
Thank you
-matt
I have been the most successful hunting crows with a owl decoy and a Johnny Stewart crow and owl fight tape. I put the volume up quite high but not as high as it will go. I always dress in full camo, with face mask as well, and plan my shooting so that I don't have to jump out to fire if possible. I use a Winchester Model 12 12 ga. with full choke and 1 1/8 oz of #6 shot. This has proven to be an excellent load for this style of hunting. At times you will have as many as 15-20 crows all screaming around you and buzzing the decoy. If you shot some crows, leave them alone and continue the calling. Many times the others will return with a vengeance and ready for action!
I've been calling in crows with the rabbit distress call while coyote hunting. I stay away from tall trees so the crows fly lower to the ground. I shoot them with a 12 ga. and what ever shells I have laying around.
Use an owl decoy on a post and an electronic crow call. They will come in if they are there. Use a 12 guage with #7 shot. Bring a few 12" wires and use them to stake up shot birds around the owl on the ground... Use your best camoflage and don't move til you shoot... they are very wary.
Ive hunted out of ditches for them it worked well get a call for them and bait. i would use some sort of dead animal for the bait duck down in the ditch have what ever call you have give him so calls and watch the madgic.
I use a 12 gauge with any where from 6 to 4 shot. i think the best hand call out there is the Faulk's C-50 Crow call. you dont need a whole lot of decoys you can bring them in with only three decoys. Well if the grass field has crows in it its fine. i hunt the fly ways, if you can find the fly ways that would work the best, hunt them in the morning when they are going out and in the evening when they are coming in. they usually come in waves so you get a good amount of birds to shoot at.

get a crow decoy. They seem to be social birds. They are smart birds, they do not like seing one of their own dead. meat scraps work if legal.
Check your local game laws, then tether a live owl in a tree near where they roost.

I have used an electronic crow call but never had much luck getting them in close. It sounds like I should be using decoys!!
