Q:
Ok so went coyote hunting the other day and it wasn't so successful. This is my first season doing so and I was wondering if you could give me some calling advice. I have two haydells game calls one is a Sly Pup Howler and the other is a cottontail In Distress/Mouse Squeaker. All help will be appreciated. Thanks. Happy Hunting and God Bless Knife Freak

ive killed fox using a knight and hale rabbit in distress hand call, the model slips my mind as of now. dont get discouraged, coyote hunting is not easy, these are one of the few animals i give credit to for having some intelligence.

first off, where you hunting at? what state and what type of terrain?

That's admirable. If you're not going to use an electronic caller, I recommend at least listening to sound recordings of the animals your calls are designed to mimic. Also, wear ear plugs when practicing. The calls are ear piercing.

I recommend an electronic collar because it allows you to keep your attention focused on the landscape in front of you instead of calling all the time and it protects your hearing by focusing the calls away from you. The serious coyote hunters I know don't spend much time using hand calls.

i have done a fair amount of research on coyotes as i started hunting them in MI recently. if you have woods, hunt them. unlike their western buddies, eastern coyotes dont like to leave the woods when coming to calls, they rarely show themselves in the open.

dawn and dusk are good times, but i prefer night. i honestly dont know what kind of winters you guys have down in oklahoma, but here in MI i hunt them during the day during the coldest days of the year in Jan and Feb. cold for me is anything below 10 degrees. when its that cold you gotta eat to live, makes them a tad easier to kill.

as for bait, i have never baited them, i have no idea. but i have seen guys use decoys with some success. they look like little rabbits on a stick and they move around. research them, when you see it you will know what im talking about.

one last thing, i would change your order. master killing some with electric, then move to hand calls when you figure out what your doing. and it will take awhile.
