22 definitely. You can but a cheap 22 from wal-mart for just over a hundred buck. I bought a Savage Mark II-f for around $125 and its was more accurate out of the box than my Ruger 10/22. But if your within city limits or have close neighbors than you might want to go with the air gun, just be sure to get something quiet.
Look at benjamins pellet guns they will outlast cheaper models. they wont hit the 1000 fps but they do come in 22 and 1.77 and at 750-800 fps they will take squirrel all day long. dont get the bb gun unless u just want to hit coke cans.
I have looked into this a little more about air rifles... and I apologize, I was wrong about some of what I thought. Anybody I ever knew just wasn't into air rifles. It seems the better ones are true rifles and have some kind of respectable performance. You want one of those at the least, even though for most budgets .22's gotta be the way to go.
BB guns are going to disappoint you in power and in ballistics, even if it is possible to buy one with more power. They have knuckleball ballistics, in other words at any range at all they lose accuracy due to not being true rifles, the same problem the original shotgun slugs had [of years ago].
I use a 22, and it is a great way to go. Better accuracy at distance, and better precision over time with standard amount of powder in each charge, as opposed to eneven pumping. There are some inexpensive options on the market for 22s.
Definitely the .22 caliber air rifle. It has much more accuracy, impact and range than the others available in air rifles and BB guns. You can shoot squirrel reliably out to 50 yards or more. When you hit them, it knocks them dead too.
If you want to shoot squirl, just buy an airrifle. BB gun will just piss squirrels off. And plus airguns have 4 times the power and are maybe $20 more.. I'd get a Remmington, Dasies are god too.

I just bought a 50$ one from wal mart and it works great, it even came with a scope
air rifle, though I prefer a .22
I prefer a .22 just because BB guns have a range of about 20 yards if your not looking to spend a ton of money.
I hunt squirrels with a Gammo Shadow 1000. You can take a squirrel out to 20 yards easily, shoot them in the head though to be sure you get them.
I hunt squirrls and birds with my gamo big cat 1200. .177 cal. dont get BB. waste of $
pellet gun. definitly. I like .22s tho. a lot better. but a pellet gun is like f-18 versus a biplane.
Air rifle....no question about it. Preferably .22.
i like my 22 rifle best
but they are makeing some very impressive air rifles now
