They attribute the rise to "perfect weather" that has produced an abundance of squirrel food including berries, nuts, acorns, seeds and fungi. "Squirrels are eating well and that helps them to breed almost all year round, producing up to five kits per litter,".
I'd say the best position to kill a squirrel is not on the ground, because of the lack of pacience in young hunters, you probably won't hit him in the grass. I would wait for him to slowly climb to a low area of a tree so you would have a head to tail shot...
a good place is wile there in the tree, better place is wile there at the base of a tree on the ground eating, if you hit them once and they dont go down then there useually not able to climb up so the run around on the ground and stop and that where you can get the again, sertain seasons mean that sertain trees and bushes bloom, they like some better than others, so look at the ones that are in bloom in sertain areas at sertain times and remember that there going after those at that time so you allways know where to look for them :)

In woods and around walnut trees.
Find the acorns, you found the squirrels.
In the head, if you are referring to shot selection.
I kill the squirrels in the country when living in the South.
Humans versus squirrels is the latest form of suburban warfare right now and foxes are yesterday's foe.
