Have you looked at used guns? You can usually find a used .22 real cheap. What's your budget? There are plenty of air rifles out there that will kill a squirrel. I have a Crossman Powermaster 664 air rifle that has killed it's share of bushy tails, and is fairly accurate up to 35 yards. Look for something that shoots at least 575 FPS and can mount a scope. Good luck!
BioGuy is right about the used gun idea, but I would skip the air rifle stage of my development if I were in you shoes. Hold out for a .22 and you'll be in the world of firearms.
Bio guy is right, used guns are much cheaper than brand new ones and most of the time just as good. As long as you buy a gun inside state lines you don't have to register the gun either so that's another plus. If you find one out of state you have to have it shipped to an ffl license holder.
A used .22 is the way to go, but make sure a gunsmith checks it out first. I enjoy your enthusiam to get in the woods. If a used gun is still out of reach you might be able to shoot the animals with a camera while you are saving up the money. Good luck
As far as a gun that will kill a squirrel, you are probably going to be paying about as much for a good enough pellet gun as you would for a decent used .22 or .17 hmr. I would go with one of the later.
I don't know if you have a dick's sporting goods near you. After rebate they have been selling a Rossi .22 rimfire and 20 gauge shotgun (Interchangable Barrels) for $99. New! Not the ferrari of guns but i would think it would certainly be funcional. Both barrels would be good for squirrel and the shot barrel could be used for rabbit or bird. They are single shot but gives you the versitlity to hunt almost anything. you could even hunt deer with the 20 gauge running simple lead rifled slugs! It would be good if you like to hunt but don't have a lot to spend on it
Sometimes you can pick up used single shot 410 shotguns like H&R really cheap. Look it over good though and make sure if you don't know much about guns, take someone you trust who does! you could also take it to a gunsmith to look over. No cracks and look to see that the inside of the barrel isn't pitted or distorted. Good Luck! the only drawback to the 410 is that ammo is kind of high. Price ammo before making any selection as well.
Any bb gun with 750+fps will do just fine if you can get a good shot on a squirrel. Wal Mart and orschelens both carry a gun called a Powerline 880 and it works just fine with 750fps. Buy some pointed pellets to penetrate, as blunt ones will just stun.
We didn't have too many squirrels where I grew up. An old Benjamin Pump .177 air rifle accounted for a lot of rabbits, snakes, frogs, a few doves (on the wing, no less), and even a couple of good-sized feral dogs. An air rifle is perfectly capable of what you want to do, as long as you keep your ranges short and stick to head or spine shots. Practice on targets comes first, then on small game. Good luck

Nothing wrong with an air gun and now ther pushing something like 1700+ feet per second!
