I have always used my .22 remington semi. I have never had a problem shooting them in the head with it. I also have a scope on there which helps. But they do get messy if you hit them anywhere else. I have you my 12 ga. with game loads but you have to pick out the lead.
I use a 20 gauge for squirrel hunting with #6 shot. The 6s penetrate the leaves and branches better than 7 1/2s and still give a dense pattern. I have used a 12 gauge as well, but it is overkill, and who wants to carry the thing?
buckhunter, and everyone else that suggested a shotgun. BOOO!!!! shotguns for little critters? that's cheating. i would use a Ruger 10/22 or a Marlin M60. any .22 LR laod will work. buy the 550 winchester packs from wally wrold
I use a 22 rifle(any will do as long as it's accurate)with a low power scope. I found out many years ago to use the sub-sonic 40 gr. loads. These loads are very accurate and extremely quiet as well as being very efficient. I've shot squirrel's and held very still and many times the woods will come alive with more tree climbers in just a few minutes. I've shot 3 from the same seated position before. Good luck to you. Never stop hunting small game or you will miss some of the best that life has to offer.
I use strictly [a couple of years ago I would have saiD .22 strictly]rimfire-nearly always .22 lr-but my CZ .22 wmr, shooting wrf'sworks great and my .17 HMR is alway's an option nowadays, however I mostly like a .22LR yet.I generally don't enjoy munching on pellet's from shotguns but in a pinch,if i was hungry I'd use one if I had nothing else.

ruger 10/22 lr by far. so much fun to shoot and easy to cary. I also love to use my stevens favorite single shot because it is so accurate.
.410 with 5 shot. I have a side by side double barrel that makes it fun.

ruger 77/22 (bolt action). I use a 20ga if I think they will be more on the ground than in the trees.
I use a .22 Remington semi for anything in the trees and a 20 ga when I expect them on the ground.

hey go cheap take the 1000 fps pellet gun and improve your shot
at least in ontario, a 1000fps isnt cheaper than a good used .22, and the ammo is no cheaper either
.22 all the way.

Mossberg 702 .22lr.
Reid, you shoot them sitting still? Oh, the shame!
22 with good iron sights or a scope or a 20 gauge with #6 shot
