Q:
What do you guys think of AR-15 style rifles for Coyote Hunting? How about Shotguns? I've usually hunted Coyotes with a bolt-action. The reason I ask, is that I bought a Bushmaster this Spring and have bought a nice Leupold Mark AR Scope with a Mil-Dot Reticule...

Sounds like a nice rig. The caliber is right, the gun is accurate enough and you even get a quick follow up shot if you need it. That could really come in handy if you have more than one dog come in.

I have used shotguns with good results before when we were just trying to thin out dogs during claving season on the farm. We would call with one guy using the rifle and another with the shotgun in case the coyote showed up out of nowhere at close range. A 3" load of #1 buckshot would put a serious hurting on them, but didn't do much for the hides.

I like the idea of coyote hunting with AR-15's. They can be very accurate, and hold lots of ammo for blasting groups of coyotes. I say go ahead and do it.

I think it would be a great choice. It'll be a great time and the hides will be in pretty good condition.

AR rifles are perfect for coyote hunting. Shotguns are good too, but are more specialized, for night hunting and for the thick stuff. A lot of guys have their bolt gun, and a shotgun right there with them in case one shows up hot and fast.

use them both if you can. have the bushmaster at the ready but keep the shotgun locked and loaded in case the dog get in close or you need it for a finishing shot.

I carry an ar-15 and a shotgun when I go coyote hunting. I love shooting the AR, it's .223 and I have dumped coyotes out at 300+ yards. They are nice when you get a runner, you can fling the lead! The shot gun is a pain to carry but I have learned that leaving it behind is a mistake. The coyotes that get away are often the ones that run in with in 30 yards but never stop!

I love them, I've hit silloetts (as many here have) out to 300m on the range with iron sites! Its an excellent choice for anything under 80-100 pounds. They are pickey though on bullet weights so do some experimenting. Also if you shoot off a bag the 20 round mags are the best, 30s are a little long.

The Bushy is deadly on coyotes. Mine likes the 50g VMAX with 25.5g of Benchmark. If you are shooting them on the run and happen to miss, your cross hairs stay on them for a very quick follow up shot. You don't miss too often though because they are fast enough to hit right where you are aiming. If you have multiple targets, you have a much better chance of getting two or three out of a pack. I also use a 25-06 for them but I must say, the Bushy makes it much easier. I like the mil dot reticles so you know where your hold over and windage are for sure.

It was close to 15 years ago when I first carried an AR-15 for coyotes. I got some strange looks from local ranchers and even stranger questions from my hunting partners. There were many doubts regarding the accuracy, reliability, looks and overall function of a semi-auto rifle as a hunting tool. Today those questions have pretty much been put to rest. Those that have used AR-style rifles realize that they are very accurate, on par with most bolt-actions, are very reliable, and are unsurpassed in terms of ruggedness!!!!!!!
