Q:
well, now that it is July, summer is in full swing and it is blazing hot out. i know that you can fish in the heat, but the bass don't seem to be biting as much as there were in may. besides, whenever i go, i roast.
my question is what do you do during the off season? any suggestions on what I can hunt or any DIY projects?

The best place to look is your State's hunting digest or magazine. That would have all the seasons and tell you what to do with the extra time.
Go at night. Fish still gotta eat. They just now eat at night.
what kind of lures should I use at night?
go either early morning or late afternoon, thats when you will have your best luck during the day
I'm like you, I cant handle the heat either. I go fishing at night for catfish, caught one the other night about 2 feet long on chicken livers
At night fish black and dark colored baits only. You may think that fishing white colored baits at night would be good, but no. Black colored ones provide a much better shadow and profile for the fish. Fish with black buzz baits, frogs, zerra spooks, jitterbugs, black plastic worms, anything really. They love hitting topwater at night.
would a Berkeley ribbon tail worm with half black and half chartreuse work?
I use spinner-bait, buzz bait, Rat-L-Traps, and my favorite crank bait (bomber) with some rattles inside. I like the way a bomber dives and vibrates. Anything that makes noise close to the surface. And retrieve or troll S-L-O-W. Give them time to home in on the signal. And spray some of that YUM (or any other brand scent on rubber skirts if they have them. I don't think it attracts them as much as helps "seal the deal" if the fish is not quite sold on your presentation.
I usually start archery practice daily in august. I would also start trap and sporting clays in years past.
Go cafishing, they tent to strike better at night in NM. for my summer spare time I am building a canoe. There are tons of boat plans online. Start shooting early in the season. Shoot skeet or trap, sight in your riffle, pick up the bow. Do something that will help improve your skills for this season
Use a crank bait to get the lure to the bottom of the lake/pond. Thats were the fish are going to be when its hot.
scout, set trail cams, plant food plots, thin out trees, clear under brush, shoot youre bow, hang stands and get a good camera and get some nice photos!
