As a New York resident I have wondered the same thing for years. It's been proposed and shot down many times. The truth is there's no valid reason why there isn't. The Anti-hunting groups are very vocal and the pro-hunting people as well as the conservation dept. pick what battles are worth fighting, sadly a dove season isn't one right now. That may change. If you live in NY (I'm guessing you do) let your (and your hunting pals/club members etc.) voice be heard to your State Senator and Assembly member. Sometimes (all times really) those rascals support a bill they're not crazy about if the other pol. backs their pet project. Its quite a racket, but it's our racket
A lot of states do not have a dove season for whatever reason. I don't think any objections are founded in biology or science, just the fact that the dove seems to be a biblical bird that the do gooders feel should not be hunted for sport.
If there is a game animal that hunting affects less than doves, I don't know what it is. Doves have an 80% mortality rate whether you hunt them or not and are prolific breeders, raising up to six broods a year. Go figure.
A NY dove bill is pending at this time. There also is a NY dove hunting organization on facebook called NY Dove Hunting. Check it out for info and who to write in support of the bill. There also is form letters, but an original letter is best. If enough hunters write and participate in public comment, NY will get a season this time around. Just spread the word, follow the issue closely, and keep writing letters. Watch for public comment opportunities and be sure you and your hunting buddies participate in them.
