One of the best rabbit dogs I have ever seen work a field was a jack russell terrrier. One in particular comes to mind; the dog was small enough to go after rabbits when they went in their holes. And thats what the dog did; jumped right in the hole the rabbits would we driven out.
redbones
I have had the best luck with beagles and the walker is a close second. The English is not a rabbit dog.
Why is your dad saying no to the beagle???

that constant baying hound thing?
Mine doesn't constantly bay. Now, if he catches a whiff of something it's on like neckbone....
I have a pecan orchard on my place and it's fun to turn him loose there and let him get on whatever hot track is there.
If you would like a close second to a beagle for hunting rabbits try a basset hound. However, be careful that you get one with a good pedigree of rabbit hunting.
If your dad is worried about the constant baying of a beagle. I currently have six beagles that I use strictly for rabbit hunting and AKC field trials. All of them are quite in the kennel. My secret use a Tri-tronics bark limiter when they are just a pup and they learn real quick not to bay in the kennel.
