If you hunt in the north you'll need to call. Especially if it is freezing. I usually bait a few days prior to hunting. Go to a local butcher shop and get somm offal and blood. Freeze it in a 5 gal bucket and place it near where you are going to hunt. Remove the bucket. this acts like a frozen pop cycle for coyotes and if its cold enough will last until they find it. Let them devour a couple then hunt over the 3rd. They are less likely to be suspicious.
The biat is a draw, after they find it. You still need to call. You didn't say where you were,so I'll give you a great way to bring them in. Roadkill deer if you can obtain a permit to do so or it is legal to pick them up in your state. If you have snow take them into a large field and stake them down.Spray the area down with fox urine. Leave along for a few days and check for trails leading to the carcass. Setup along the heaviest trails leading in and spray with urine again and start 20 minute sets. another sure fire way is to hunt off shore on frozen lake fronts and rivers. Doing the same thing. If a coyote thinks there is a red fox in the area he will hunt him down.If he finds food all the better to make him continue to come in and visit. Use a fox call when doing this. It puts at least 75 yotes in my truck bed a year Jan -Mar
I go to my local butcher shop get all the fat and scraps with blood and bait them in that way doesnt cost anything and helps the butcher shop get rid of the reminants and scraps
what i have done in the past is put it in the spot i want it, put out a little fox urine out, got out the crow call i use for shock calling turkeys in the spring, and blow. Some old timer showed me that trick. Works really well after a snow storm.

yeah you'll want to call.. that will get their attention and then if they catch the scent of that as they come in and they'll be on a dead run.
