Q:
I am going rabbit hunting for the first time tomorrow night and I was wondering what was better to use a 12 gauge or scoped 22 these are the only two options i have. Shots will probably be within 35 yards.

Rabbit hunting at night---is that legal? It isn't where I live.

a lot of people on here seem to hunt small game and predators at night, i've never heard of it in KY. the only thing hunted here at night that i know of are raccoons.

If you are shooting them on the move use a shotgun. If stationary use a 22. My guess is at night hunts I have only heard of using a rifle. Check the local dnr to see what is legal in your state.

Definitely make sure it's legal if it is then I'd use the 22 you will get a lot of shots at them sitting still at night. Hunting rabbits at night..kind sounds like shooting fish in a barrel to me.

I agree with sartan88. It depends on your hunting conditions. If you see them sitting and you know where the bullet ricochet will stop, then a .22 will work. If they are on the run, the 12 gauge is the way to go. Hunting at night was legal for me and I'e shot many along the timber edge. Although I shot hundreds that way, I don't ever recall one standing still. When I saw them they were running from corn fields or alphalpha fields for the timber when we saw them.

Also, how comfortable are you hitting a moving target with a .22? You don't want to injure a bunch of rabbits. I also feel like the .22 wont spook as many rabbits. IMHO there isn't a bad choice.

Use a .22, it's more of a challenge. Just make sure you make the shot count.
