Actually, I hate the darn things ... at times anyway, like when they outsmart me, or when they eat the flowers by the house. Two does are bedding in the back yard, taunting me because they know they are safe.
Truly, hunting them can take you over a broad range of terrain and climate. No creature is more wired or wary or as satisfying to hunt. Taste great, too.
Majestic creatures, no other animal, bird what have you makes my heart pump faster than whitey. To say honestly I have no idea. Just the faint snap of a twig of an incoming deer gets me going. Being out in the wilderness. Just the effort to get close when they know that they are being hunted. Much, much more.
I like them because they are so mysterious and elusive. In northern Maine you dont see a lot of big bucks just wondering fields like in other areas of the country, and it takes a great deal of luck and skill to actually find one in the deep woods. Pretty much makes you want to havest one that much more when it is so difficult to find/see the animal even when you see sign all around you...doenst help that I brought a fawn home from the bog behind my gram's house when I was ten years old and set it on her couch with a blanket wrapped around it...Ive had a passion for these animals since I was born
The Whitetail buck has held a certain mystique to me for as long as I can remember. The adrenalin rush when a nice buck steps into bow-range is like no other i've experienced. One of my most "successful" hunts was a bowhunt years ago where a mature buck came in to my rattle and shredded trees with his rack 25 yds downhill. He busted me as i raised my bow, and a mexican standoff ensued. After several minutes of trying to stay absolutely still( stop shaking!) while my heart was jumping out of my chest, the buck wandered off, never presenting a shot. I saw him several more times that week, all just out of range. He beat me and deserved to live another season. What a worthy adversary he was.(is) Why do i love them? I think it was passed on to me by my Dad.
I unique animal, the Whitetail. In my opinion they are one of the most beautiful creatures on this planet. They have tremendous survival skills, and are adaptable to virtually every patch of soil in the U.S. At times they appear to be ghosts that can vanish like a thought, and then they will hide under a pine bough so thoroughly that you can't see them even when you know where they are. They will lay still and let you walk by within mere feet or burst out of the woods 300 yards away at the sound of your door closing. They can smell you, that's for certain, you're probably not going to fool their nose.
The majesty of a big big buck that walks out into a clearing 25 yards away when the early morning fog is lifing and the sun is peeking around a few branches that are still dripping wet is a feeling deep in my primitive soul that I never want to lose.
I wish I could find the words to explain my love, but I cant, all I know is I love the challenge of hunting them, and throw in that it is the most beautiful/peaceful time of the year to be in the woods, and we have got a win win win situation.
The smell: The smell of decaying leaves in fall after a light rain, the smell of freshly burned gun powder, and the smell of onions and garlic next to a fresh piece of backstrap.
I love them because they are beautiful animals and are a great challenge to hunt. I also love them because they give me an excuse to turn off my cellphone and go and sit in the woods every fall.
we almost hit one last night. i just love them becuase of how quitly they can move around and wothout being noticed. thank god their not known to attack. the hitting one part had nothing realy to do with this but it was kinda cool. the doe didnt realy care though she finished standing in the road and then walked into the woods like no one was there
In the pursuit of whitetail, I've found peace and quiet in the isolation and distance from human and vehicular traffic. Friendships have developed, and campfire stories have provided many hours of entertainment. There's no extension cord long enough to plug in a television and ruin the atmosphere with network television. It is an escape from the cluttered, mundane to the comparatively simple. And at the sight of a mature, well-nourished buck I am reminded that there is still beauty, majesty, strength and grace in my world; I simply have to separate myself from energy-sapping, time-wasting distraction to find it.
I love them because they are one of the most majestic animals in the woods. Their senses are so great it makes them an extreme challenge to bowhunt. They taste good. And well, they are just beutiful.
they taste good and are such beautiful creatures not only when you hunting them but also just to watch them, they are my faveorite animal to hunt and to watch.

The peace and serenity of the hunt. A bad day in the field is better than a good day at work.

Because it's amazing to watch a big buck sneak through the woods without making a sound.
