I'm not to familiar with the 450 Marlin, I believe it supposed to have more thump than the 45/70. However, with modern rifles, handloading and the loadings you can get from Buffalo Bore, there is nothing the old 45/70 wont do. I'm very impressed with my fathers Marlin 1895, looks good and is a shooter.
I love my 45-70 it is very versatile even for the large round. It will to great for moose, black bears and boars. The 450 is larger and produces more of a thump but I still enjoy shooting the 450 more.
The 450 Marlin produces more energy and should be a more effective caliber for very large game like moose, but the recoil is rather unpleasant for smaller game.
I remember my daddy and his brothers use to hunt with a 450 Marlin, when they hunted the blue ridge as young men. I have it now in my cabinet but I do not use it that much because it has a real smack to the old shoulder, since I hurt my shoulder it is to hard to recover from shooting it, but it is something I will never part with and will be pasted on to my sons.

My buddy has a 450 and it really has the power. I think it may have the edge.

Probably the 450 Marlin. I have a Marlin 1895 in 45-70 and it does the job for me. I wouldn't trade for the 450.
I have never had a big "Boar" hog complain about the 45/70.
Huntress,
The .450 Marlin was only hatched in the year 2000.
