My Grandpa did for years. Found it as a baby, bottle fed it. It lived in his backyard, would come to him when he called it and eat from his hand. It was very very cool.
I had an owl for a pet for about a year as a kid. I could "call" for it and it would come in and perch on the bird feeder. I hand fed it a few times, totally freaked out the kids in my neighborhood.
I had one when I was younger. They make awesome pets! that thing did everything with me... played tag (ran circles around me while i tried to catch it) sat on my shoulder while i did chores, slept at the head of my bed at night. One of the most interesting pets ever! after three months, he decided to head to the woods. He'd come back to visit like clockwork every three days for a while, then it was every three weeks. and for years afterwards I could tell which one he was in the woods cause of the way he'd sit and look at me instead of hightail it outta there like other gray's... you did needa be careful around company and kids... they have really sharp nails to climb those trees and my shoulders have some scars to prove it... but it was a small thing... man i miss those days!
Same as jbird's grandpa, we once found a baby gray squirrel that had fallen out of the nest (actually a squirrel box). He lived in our yard for a week or two, came when called and ate out of our hands. Eventually Dad decided he was well enough to take "home" and climbed a ladder and put him back in the box. Never knew what happened to little Skippy after that.
We've had quite a few maybe 3 or 4 that have fallen out of the nest or the mother dies but they're fun to have around we had to give them up later on though so they could learn to survive in the wild

I like to see them returned to the "wild". Wild animals don't belong in cages or pens reguardless of how cute we think they are.
i caught one in a box trap, shes too small to eat, so im keepin her in a old chicken cage, pretty interesting to watch.
