Growing up in Montana, I once hooked, fought and lost the state record Golden Trout...The fish easily broke the record by 2+ lbs...It was heartbreaking, but part of fishing...If you dont have a "one that got away story", you hav'nt been fishing long... Whats yours?

My cousin and i were fishing in Michigan and were only 12 at the time. We had taken a paddle boat out a short distance. Well I had caught a pike, was able to reel it in, got it into the boat. I then put the stringer through his mouth without a problem. So he was hooked on the stringer. He snapped at me, which scared me thinking this fresh water pirahana was going to bite my fingers off so I jumped back. The fish simultaneously flopped and was back in the water. So there is some pike swimming around with a stringer in his mouth.

Of course when we returned no one believed us and thought that it was completely made up. Anyways, from now on we always hook the other end of the stringer onto the boat before we go out.

I lost a monster tarpon due to a decinatagrating drag, that caused me to have to grab my fly line as not to lose a 50 dollar line, and I got badddddd burns.

I was fishing in one of the local creeks in my county with some of my friends after school last year. We were doing pretty good catching some decent hybrid stripe and yellow bass. Then I felt me line just tighten. I thought my lure was caught on a log under water. Then the line started moving. I had hooked a monster striped bass.(at least for that creek) And of course it took off with my lure and snapped my line.

I was Halibut fishing in 1986 near homer AK. Early in the day I boated my best fish a 94 pounder. Later I hooked a monster. He would lay on the bottom 300 ft down and shake his head then just lay there. When he did move it was like the scene in Jaws when Quint hooked the shark on a rod. I had no control of the fish. The boat captain estimated it was a 300 lb plus or minus fish but it finally ripped the hook out when he shook his head again. When a big Halibut shakes his head it really jerks your rod up and down.

Three years ago I was Crappie fishing with minows in a local pond using light tackle and 6 lb line. Hooked a really nice bass and played him several minutes. He would take off and I would follow in my John boat. He eventually got the line in some grass which rendered my drag useless. Then he broke the line.

I caught a very nice rainbow trout, my very first fly fishing. Well somehow he managed to work his way off the rope he was on and I never saw him again.

Last summer I was shore fishing for crappie, walking the bank. I saw a huge bass hanging under a submerged log. I dropped a little crappie jig on his nose and he took it- fight on!!
Unfotunately my ultralight outfit wasn't enough to muscle him out of the log and he broke off. I'm guessing 5-7 pounds.
