I hate to inject some rational thought into this frenzy of reactionary paranoia, but here I go.

First off, according to the post from MLH, its the customs department that "wants" to ban them. What authority does customs have to ban anything? They could block the import or export of such knives I guess but, police in the interior of the country enforce laws, not policies made by someone in the customs department.

Secondly, everyone is getting all bent out of shape over how Obama wants to do this. Is there even one shred of evidence that he supports this "policy"? I know everyone thinks he supports this policy, but everyone would probably also believe a post that says he eats orphan babies for breakfast.

I don't know why so many people feel the need to come up with imaginary reasons to hate this man when dozens of really good ACTUAL reasons to hate him.

Customs that would make a huge percentage of folding knives illegal in the United States. By the end of today, I will have personally emailed my own two Senators and my Congressman and then as many Senators and Congressmen in the Southern, Western and Mountain states as I can manage. ALL of their fathers and grandfathers carried knives everyday. In addition, we will make personal phone calls and send a faxed copy of our letter to the state office for the Senators and Congressman from our state with an attempt to make a personal contact with the Legislator.

i could see where their coming from in a way. think of it does he here of us pulling knives to skin animals or cut rope? no they hear of the guy pulling a knife and killing a cop or robbing a store. however doing this would be terrible no one would even obey this law half the time i pull my knife i only have one hand free they most likely dont want us to have that quickly of access to our knives for those of us cowards who pull knives illegaly. having to use two hands would give people time to run or cops to draw. but whats the point most of us will just go to fixed blades and even i who carry a knife dont realy want to see people making it that noticable it makes some people nervous. sad the world we live in

Utility knives also, kind of need those for work. Not like any banned knives would be a good one. Just wonder where Barrack gets his wool, it must be pretty thick and long seems how he covered a lot of peoples eyes with it.

If this is true, would it really surprise anyone? After all, it is common knowledge that liberal politicians are of exceptional "practical sense". Why would anyone want a knife that you could make such easy use of with just one hand? It is simply too efficient for government to reconcile, they must go!

The customs agency does not have the power to enforce this ban anywhere except border crossings.

Does anyone have any evidence at all that Congress, or the president, or the justice department or anyone else who actually has the authority to enforce the ban has any interest in it?

Like I said before, this looks like everyone is getting all worked up simply for the sake of getting all worked up.

There are plenty or REAL reasons to get worked up, we don't need any more IMAGINARY ones.

Real facts and actual information is infinetely more useful than comments like:

However, I am not to worried about this. Such a proposal would only be supported by extreme liberals. It is true that Democrats have a majority in both houses and the white house, however it is not true that extreme liberals hold such majorities.

There are many Democrats in both the house and the senate who were elected to fairly conservative, traditionally republican districts. These "blue dog" democrats know they would quickly be voted out of office if they supported such rediculous measures.

Also, the president has shown many times that while he may be more liberal than most of us, he tends to shy away from decision that alienate the majority of Americans (think Mexican assault weapon fiasco)

Therefore, while it is always a good idea to let your congressional representative know what you are thinking, I won't be loosing any sleep over this one.

hunterkid makes a good point I understand that you all are probably upset but either way dividing our country like this and calling the president a nazi does no good but make us look like idiots who'd rather argue with each other then focus on real problems.
