Q:
How many of you folks would like to see the point totals go away? Yes, I have tested gear. I had the opportunity not because of point totals; I know at least ten more guys who had more points than me at the time. I'd like to think that it was because Jay Cassell thought my answers and responses signified experience and capability. Hell... for all I know I may have just been redneck of the month...! I don't participate for the gear. I participate for the keyboard and real life friendships I have cultivated. I communicate everyday with folks all around the country that I otherwise would not have the pleasure of conversing with much less make their acquaintance. That is why I'm here. I'll make ya'll a little side wager of a cup of coffee and a Danish pastry. If the points totals went away so would many of the penny ante questions and answers... Any takers?

Bee
I agree 100%. You can't say it better.
I second that Bee. Kill the points thing. I just hang around to see what y'all are gonna say next anyway....
i kinda agree and disagree
agree
some people just post stuff for points
dont give good answers but get points
disagree
i still want to test gear but that isnt what i think about all the time
Amen to that!! I bet ya about 50% of the user would dissapper in a few days. Even though they wont admit that they are on here for free gear. The knowledge that I recieved on here is priceless. Like Bee said I beleive that I made some friends on here, unfortly I most likey never meet them.
P.S Thank you F&S for giving me that brand new loaded 2010 Ford F150 Crew Cab!!!!!!!
Tough question. The giveaways are good for market research. If I were a manufacturer, I would want some reassurance that a capable and articulate person did the review. But others who are not quite as literate may spend more time hunting and fishing, and would be better qualified to judge . I guess I am happy to see most of the comments, and I can spot something that is just a marker to get points. But it's not my say. I don't need their gear, and I very likely have different tastes and needs, Hunting and fishing are different from one end of this country to another. I like Field and Stream primarily because of the role the magazine's owner played in Retriever Trials when that started. The Field and Stream Perpetual Trophy is still going strong after over 70 years. I like the web site and certain contributors may be influential in steering the industry. This is entertainment for me, and will fall by the wayside when dawg training begins. I might add that certain sections have no place in this magazine. Take advantage of the rights we still have and quit bitching! It does absolutely no god I like the idea of going to a remote lake with camping gear and a canoe, or going to a cornfield before daylight on a frosty Fall day. There must be a Paranoia website for those others to attend.
I agree
I garendangtee you I would still be here if there were no points. I love this place, I have never met anyone personally but I love shooting the breeze and talking about a way of life.
I like what blackdawgz pointed out. The manufactors would perfer their gear tested by someone thats is be able to get a good review on the item. Instead of risking $$$ to take a chance of something later find out its does not work. Where else would you find people that can give you a true test reading than F$S.
I think that the points should be hidden from the users so they can see how many points they have. EX. Someone with 44,000 points wants 50,000 points by midnight would put random questions so they can have 50,000 points. F&S can still use the same format they use now, just the users can not see their own points.
Excellent question!!!
Some questions are silly but they are easy to read past.
My guess is if everyone had "0" points starting tomorrow then it would be a renewed race to get then keep the lead in points. Hence, no change.
I think the whole point thing and the promise to test gear is to promote activity, good or bad.
I agree. I just enjoy hearing stories and learning from all of ya'll. I crave learning about the outdoors....wish that applied to school. I started getting on here just for a sense of community of everyone who enjoys the outdoors.
At first I was going to post a resounding agreement, but now that I think of it, there is a solution that keeps the points and the gear testing, and will still kill off the goons. No points simply for posting something. The only points are through good ratings from the users and editors. The goofballs will give up when they aren't getting any plus ones, and the people that really know their stuff will still have a chance at gear.
Ahh screw it. Ditch the points. I'm not signed up anyways.
Either change would be great, now it's just problematic.
Gonna quit this whammy-jammer is what I'm gonna do! This is mental illness. Gonna run it up to 10,000 points for its own sake and go back to front page sniping. Don't want no stuff. I am but a humble servant of God and the Spirit of the Black Labrador Retriever. My inputs will be solely to prevent the abuse of my kindred spirits and earliest memories. The double-barreled black nose.
I agree with it. We shouldn't be on the site for the chance to pick up free stuff, if you want gear that bad go save money and buy it, or live without it. I want a place to talk about fishing and hunting, the chance at free stuff is just a bonus to hearing other opinions from people like Big O, Del in KS, and Buckhunter.
I'm new here, so my opinion isn't worth much. But I agree that the points just encourage people to post dumb stuff and one word comments. Shane's right that they could change the format for earning points, but why not just dump it. They can pick people to test gear based upon the posts that they make. Anyway, I'm not signed up either. If I want to write a product test I'll just write about something I bought myself.
Might be good to leave in an opportunity to give the poster some feedback, positive or negative. Let the readers give a thumbs-up or gold star or a knot-on-the-head. Not everyone is willing to write out praise or criticism each time. Just don't operate a system that rewards pointless posts.
(I just added this post so I could earn another 100 points!)
I will be honest gear would be a nice bonus but the thing I really appreciate about this site is reading through others questions and the responses that they get just to learn something new(even if its not something I plan on using in the near future never know when it might come in handy), as well as being able to ask questions on something I dont know about. To all the people on this site that do their best to help educate people and spread the knowledge they have acquired over the years I got to say thanks, keep up the good work.
Well said, Bee
I would agree with most of these comments as well. First off i think that the points aren't what gets you gear, and it would be fine if the points were gone. The companies need some way of judging a users performance. I don't think it just happened that Bee got all the points he did. He has been an extremely worthy contributor to this site, and it shows with his points. In this perspective I would say the points serve a good purpose. Sure there may be a few users who want to get more points and add another lovely gold star added to their name, but its not hurting anyone. I don't think you can get thousands of points by not contributing valuable information..The stars and points create a sort of heirarchy that demands a little respect, maybe its a good system after all?
I post one word comments occasionally when the question warrents a simple answer or vote. Not every question needs a 2 paragraph answer. I, like most everyone, am on here for fun and information not to see how many points I can earn and gear I can get. This is why Wpiti's comment stuck out to me, b/c i recieved a -1 for a one word comment I left on "which gun should I get: this or that?" Sure you can give your reasons for why you would choose one, but if 5 people have given ample justification for their choice then why should I be penalized for giving my opinion without an explanation? (like it matters) It's not the points I care about. Not griping, I'm just saying this all shouldn't be so serious.
As for Bkeeper's suggestion to do away with the points system, that is fine with me. I did sign up for the gear, but I won't lose any sleep if I never get anything. So take them away.
I only came to this site last year, never used the computer much. One of the best things about learning to use it has been finding this place it's like geting a new magazine each day only better.I never give the points a thought.I love reading and talking about hunting and guns with people who have used them or have been places I can only dream about. My family would laugh at that comment because I have been to a number of different states and the amount of hunting I do.It's not the points it's the knowledge gained.
No offense intended johnycakes! If one word does it, so much the better. I just see some post that seem like obvious point earners. I wouldn't zing you for a one-worder . . .
unless you chose the wrong gun! :-)
Right on Bee... I think some are trying to rack up points rather than interact, sharing information or learning. I wouldn't mind if they dropped it.
It was in the not too distant past that there was no point system and we got along just fine. We would be fine again without them.
It has really been fun using this site the last few years and I look forward to more. Amazing! some of the stuff you learn here. BTW I stopped looking to see how many points I have early last year.
Hey bee look at all the points you are racking up here. Dang wish I had thought of this one yuk, yuk.
Del
I just looked, and it's no wonder why you quit looking. It would take two men and a boy to help you count them all!
Agreed. Mostly. I am here for the wealth of information available. I always take advice with a grain of salt but I'm generally very weary of a sales associate. Hearing advice from people who have nothing to gain from it is different. I understand a ranking system for users, However I think it would be more useful to have a short description of what areas you are and are not interested in.
I am not here for the Gear, I am fortunate enough to get pro-deals on a decent range of outdoor items.
Get rid of the points, make the testing based on knowledge and helpfulness rather than rewarding sasquatch questions.
I've had some free trail offers in my junk mail and thats where i left them.I read some of the questions and feel that there may be a young one out there needing help so i try to help.Shoot i'm not that young anymore but i'm still learning.I don't care about the points. You've seen the look in a childs eyes when the have closed the deal,They don't know if they want to cry or laugh.Every one be safe out there.
Points?...We Don't need no stinkin' Points!
I forgot about the points actually. Good idea
yes sir i agree, without the points there would only be good answers and comments, and field and stream could still use gear testers, it would just be based on how much experience they though someone had based on their comments.
so to sum it up they would look at quality not quantity.
the answers section gets too much activity, it'd be good if the best stuff didnt get crowded out. So if any of it is just point-grabbing it ought to go.
myself, to test gear I never even entered properly for that, so don't figure anything puts me here but wanting to keep up with you guys
Well I agree 100% with your Bee, but unlike us, F&S does not want all these people to leave their site. For webpage advertising purposes, the more hits the site gets a day the more money F&S can charge for advertising. They are first and foremost a business and are in business to make money.
So I am confident they will not change anything that will get users to leave, but what F&S could do, is make the site a little more user friendly. On the answer section, add in a search function, make the posts capable of being edited. With these functions we should see less "dumb" and repeat questions, but F&S also should not lose users, if anything they would gain more users who could use the old answer section as an informative database of outdoor info.
Editors, are you listening?
Fine by me. I'm here everyday. I only sign in when I feel like making a comment and this is that time. Get rid of them. I don't care about testing anything or point. I'm just here for the party!!
The quality of questions and answers were much higher before the point/gear testing came into existence.
I hate questions like that...even if they are good ...Pro Like Maost have said ....Bad questions are gone as far as answers go there are so many topics/answers that are not cut and dry and alot depends on the upbringing/experience of the poster hence some disagreements ( I think of is a 30-30 enough for grizzly) >>>>\\Con I trust alot of ya'lls experience and I would like gear to be reviewed by an unbiased source that is not woried about ad campaign money etc So I am torn between the two...Fact is if the points went away I would stay
Bee makes sense; the points really don't matter. I enjoy the exchange of ideas and information, and I'd rather be judged on content than points.
i have no idea how many points i have, i just get on here to keep up with clay, del and the gurmpy ol shooters lol. i do believe the site would be better without the points, i get tired of looking through all the dumb questions and answers. i know there may be some ligit questions and answers that seem dumb to me, but most of them are teengers who are looking for something for nothing.
Points are good and bad. Have to admit this system does seem to draw and keep more people than F&S's sister site.
I suspect most newcomers are more concerned getting stars than they are about points. I rarely even notice the stars anymore - just the quality of the posts.
Trying to remember back before the points and gear (I had a different moniker before the change). Seemed Q&As were more relevant - as Happy points out - quality was higher. But I do enjoy the PERIODIC trivia and off-subject stuff.
It wasn't too long ago that the +s really meant something. Some people are marking +1s on every answer. Even though it adds to the marker and markee's points - it's truly misguided. +s were meant to be earned, for something special.
Go to the Most Answered questions and you see the same answers posted 100's of time by the same users. This stuff is obvious. Can also go to profiles and infer where the points came from. Once you establish a points-geared reputation it sticks with you. Better to just give it up and start all over again and do it right the next time.
I totally agree and besides, what manufacturer would pick me to begin with because there product more than likely is a piece of trash and isn’t worthy to even being on my list of equipment.. LOL!
If someone wants all my points, you can have them!!!!
I DON”T CARE!!!!
AND FAR AS EQUIPMENT GOES, I HAVE WHAT I BASICALLY NEED!
But if there is a Manufacturer who is worthy and wishes for me to evaluate there there goods, I will put it to the test and give it back them or donate it to someone who really needs it!
From 1986 to 1990 at Eielson AFB Alaska, I was the President of the Base Exchange Sportsmen Council and the Vendors worst NIGHTMARE! But we did have the best of what was actually needed with no FOO FOO stuff!!!
I was in the BX one day getting more spoons to go Salmon fishing at Valdez and a fella walked up and asked what was the best bait to use? Dynamite works pretty good! This guy evidently was just out of ATF school, had no prior experience in anything except probably changing diapers if not his own and had no sense of humor! Did I have fun with him and later became one of the frequent shooters at the range.
To me, this blog is like an Ol’Country Store or better yet on some shooting or camp where Old Friends get together, drink coffee and talk about the good ol’times and help someone with a project..LOL :)
Take everyone here, to me you all are best of ol’friends, we just haven’t met yet!
Hey kolbster
Just ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZZ!!! past those dumb questions like I do..LOL!!
Happy Myles
Got dinking what you said. as time goes by people will come in and out. I believe that's the case, we have different variety than last year too. I also believe we are attracting more people and if that the case, we need to be careful on how we approach it.
I was talking to a friend a few weeks ago and she said the reason her Son doesn't go to Church is because during one of the services years ago, someone came up behind him grabbed and raised his arms and said "you knead to get the Holy Ghost in you!" and that turned him off. So go figure
Clay,
I have no problem with naive, or amateur questions, I plead guilty in these areas many times. Asking them is how we learn. I also enjoy trivia as well as anyone. Neither do I mind multiple answers and corrections, that is part of the fun of chatting and making friends. However, sometimes entries look suspiciously made solely for racking up points.
I'll be around no matter what the format.
Here is the solution to satisfy everybody!
0 points for making a comment 20 points for each +1, -20 points for -1 and not allow a self +1.
That way the points will actually mean something. I get mostly annoyed with the people that will correct typo's just for the additional points (the jig is up, we know what you are trying to do) and the "this should put me up to 10,000 points!" comments.
Happy Myles
You better not run off! LOL!
beekeeper you are 100% right. they could take away the points and i sure would stay. i am fairly new to this site because my last few years in the army between iraq and being a drill sergeant has kept me out of the woods but after discovering this site by accident i now make sure to stop buy as often as possible to see if i can help or learn somthing i havent thought of asking. beekeeper i have learned a good bit from you in a short time just ready what you have to say to others.
Agree with Bee, Coop, and Babs.
Kinda liked that one idea of the readers awarding the points, though I really don't remember much about that system. Like Clay, I have what I basically need in the way of gear, and if it will stand up to me, it will stand up. Problem is, some of it is dang near as old as WMH!LOL.
MLH- What was your moniker before the blog change? By chance Silver Arrow? Haven't seen him for awhile, and your styles are close.
I agree with y'all the points ain't important it's the shared knowledge and the BSing with semi like minded individuals.
And sometimes the pleasure of antagonizing antis and the lliberal lot that likes to put down the traditions of others.
Like I said before I don't know everything but I know I like this site and most of y'all on it.
I had a thought. What if the point totals were kept, but it was set up so we couldn't see them and the rankings weren't shown? We'd be back to having it where the Ed's are the only ones seeing things, not the folks making a mad scramble for that next star....I realize the site depends on the advertisers and the traffic to be commercially viable.
Agree..... I could care less about the points, I just enjoy reading and answering questions if I think I have something to contribute. I usually just skip over the stupid stuff.
Hey, I just got my second star. I'm gonna go out and try to pick up chicks!

I'll be around no matter what the format.
i have no idea how many points i have, i just get on here to keep up with clay, del and the gurmpy ol shooters lol. i do believe the site would be better without the points, i get tired of looking through all the dumb questions and answers. i know there may be some ligit questions and answers that seem dumb to me, but most of them are teengers who are looking for something for nothing.
To me, this blog is like an Ol’Country Store or better yet on some shooting or camp where Old Friends get together, drink coffee and talk about the good ol’times and help someone with a project..LOL :)
Take everyone here, to me you all are best of ol’friends, we just haven’t met yet!
Hey kolbster
Just ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZZ!!! past those dumb questions like I do..LOL!!
