Q:
I can legally shoot 4 does this year. I know we only have room/use for 2, but I want to donate the meat to foodbanks. I just want to keep someone from going without food this Christmas. Have any of you guys/gals ever done this? What say you?

I'm in the same boat here john, but the program "hunters for the hungry" is usually underfunded which means i have to pay for the processing, which can get expensive. I let the does walk because it would cost me nearly $100 to shoot and donate it. We're eating it up to make room in the freezer!

Will they take a home-processed one or does it have to be done professionally? Cause I have no problem butchering them myself.

Ive donated deer(ususally at least one a year sometimes more)for the last 6yrs to the hunters for the hungry program. I've never been charged for the processing fee where I'm at (sorry steve. personaly i think its a great program but if you dont want to pay for processing check with where you'll be donateing it first to see if they charge. also i couldnt guess at if they would take on you butchered yourself

on another note you could also check with your local food bank to see about donateing it directly to them.

That sounds like a wonderful idea. It's nice to know that you helped someone keep from going hungry.

Most food banks cannot take anything but canned or boxed food. In the old days I donated a lot of wild meat but the animal rights idiots got the health dept behind them. Does anybody remember the days when the authorities used to clean up the road kills and give them to welfare folks or the old soldiers home? Not any more! Leave it to rot. I think the best bet is to go scout out some needy folks yourself and deliver the meat. Start with your local seniors center. They'll probably know lots of guys who can't hunt any more who would love to have some meat.

I usually butcher them myself and give it to families I know that need it. Much more satisfying .

(This might post twice ... not sure what happened to the first post. Website was acting up earlier today.)

Great thing to do hjohn. Might consider giving away the first deer each season. Check the Farmers and Hunter Feeding the Hungry (FHFH) website for local butchers that participate - FHFH covers the cost. They typically grind all the meat to stretch its use. Can also donate money directly to FHFH or even volunteer.

Also check your state wildlife agency website. There might be a link to butchers that are associated with other organizations. Some of these probably require you to pay for the processing. Still money well spent.
