Q:
I have seen photos of a 28-foot long alligator killed by game wardens at Lake Thomas near Winter Haven, Florida. It had been spotted from a helicopter while swimming with a deer in its jaws. I have been told that this picture is a fake, and that the largest alligator on record was 19 feet long, killed in Louisiana. Does anybody out there know the true story?

Is this the same photo you saw? This one says that it was in Alabama. It looks like a big gator but I can't tell if it's a fake or not.

It looks somewhat fake but hey you never know when you let wild animals live peacefully for many years they're bound to grow to enormous sizes. But i am going to say i would buy the head mount in a heartbeat Lol

Seems to me I read somewhere that while the picture was real and of a very large gator with a deer carcass, the 28' part of the story was fantasy.

Clay -

When I wuz at Eglin AFB, I saw a photo taken in 1937 (no way to fake it) of people clearing the land for the base.

One had his hands around the throat of a Eastern Diamondback, with his arms extended over his head.

The snake's body touched the ground in front of him and extended an equal length on the ground toward the camera.

If that guy wuz only 5'8", the snake wuz over 12' long!!!

If you scale the deer to the gator, it would be about 12-13 feet, maybe. Also the link Skeeb posted had the story of a "KTBS" helicopter. KTBS is a station in Shreveport, LA, not Alabama or Florida. All broadcast stations east of the Mississippi start wit h "W", not "K".

The photo is real. I understand it was taken in the everglades. I agree with WAM in that on scale with the deer it appears to be a large one at about 12 feet but it is no 28 footer.

that's kind of like the brown bear in alaska that was so big he could stand on his hind legs and look through the second story windows on a house. not thinking that was real either.

If this was true it would be in the news with reporters all over it. But I haven't seen or heard on any of the news stations, so I would say a fake! But the sad part is that they killed this harmless beast for a photo. Humans hunt deer and game, so why can't alligators do the same for their survival.
