Print ShareThisA Michigan boy reportedly has been suspended from school for curling his hand into the shape of a gun and pointing it at another student.

Erin Jammer, said her son, Mason, was just playing around when he made the gesture Wednesday, the Grand Rapids Press reported.

"I do think it's harsh for a six-year-old. He's six and he just likes to play. Maybe what you could do is take his recess away. He's only six and he doesn't understand any of this," Erin Jammer said.

But officials at Jefferson Elementary School said the behavior made other students uncomfortable, and they suspended Mason for the remainder of the week, the paper reported.

School officials also told the paper that Mason had been warned repeatedly against pretending to aim his hand at students but continued the behavior over several months.

Jammer told the paper her son isn't violent and doesn’t have toy guns at home. She suggested a less harsh punishment, like taking Mason’s recess away, might be more effective in teaching him not to make a gun with his hand.

"He's only six and he doesn't understand any of this," she said.

"School officials also told the paper that Mason had been warned repeatedly against pretending to aim his hand at students but continued the behavior over several months." It sounds like this kid won't listen to the teachers and deserves what he got. The fact that he has a pattern of disobedience that happens to involve making a gun with his hand doesn't excuse his behaviour. It the same thing as if he repeatedly refused to put away his lunch tray over several months. This is NOT an example of politcally correct behavior - politically correct behavior would be to forbid the school system from disciplining this precious snowflake who sounds like a misbehavnig brat.

So in the infant stage before a child can talk, when they point at what they want and say goo ga, that is a threatening act. By their own admission it was a finger not a weapon. The child showed great intellect by ignoring or refusing to obey an illogical and illigitimate order to stop pointing his finger. Since the finger is not a weapon this is not a security issue but clearly indoctrination. Why, in a free society must we be forced to subject our children to this indoctrination in government schools. Why is this monopoly exempt from competition?

I used to think I was indecisive, now I'm not so sure. I think it's idiotic to equate pointing a finger with pointing a gun, but Bryan01 has a point, and a good one. I have a relative who works with at risk kids in the school system and she is virtually handcuffed when it comes to being able to impose any sort of discipline on her students---students who are already in her class because of bad behaviour---so it could be that suspension is the only thing that could be done that would have any impact on the child since the child would be at home, thus putting the burden on the parents.

Because of political correctness and all that goes with it, the school systems have become child care services rather than educational institutions. My relative says that she is staying in the job primarily to finish her career and get the pension and benefits.

Anyhow, I just think there may be more than one facet to this situation.

If you are the administrator that feels the need to suspend a 6 year old for this, you are at best a secular progressive communist. If you really think there's a big wrong here there are much better ways to get the child to learn and to not do some things. IMO suspension and making a big deal out of this is probably way more harmful to the child than anything.

If this happened to my kid, there would be a change of schooling to home school or private school. It's not the fact that the child's behavior is right or wrong, it's the fact that these administrators in this school system are that weak. Somebody there in that school system is really making their gun control/2nd Amendment statement. This is really not all about Junior and his hand gesture. There is more going on here.

I think Society especially the Scholastic side of it needs a reallity check.
They need parents that own guns and archery equipment , Law enforcement, NRA, NSSF, to stand up and say Hey you know what these are the facts... these are what we see.. if you don't like it atleast reallize it is a part of our society and history. It is not a black eye or an end of the world appoclypse and DO NOT force your views upon my children or family and stop the rediculous rules and outlandish punnishments.

No wonder home schooling is becoming ever more popular.

I remember when I was a kid playing Soldier, Cowboys and Indians, Cap guns and shooting bb guns and we used the finger gun and shouted bang when we didn't have our cap guns.

Andy Griffith show remember it: Andy Taylor never carried a gun unless he had too... But the kids on the show playing cops and robber, cowboys and indians they used realistic METAL looking cap guns and their fingers and even bows...
We've come along way down hill since then... Now guns have to have orange tips or are off colored

I got a bb gun 2 yrs ago to teach my boy the basics and safely show guns are to be respected without the noise and recoil.
The older lady in fron tof me in the check out line turned and asked me in a disdained manner is the gun for him? I said yes it is and he's gotta learn sometime. She followed up with an eye roll and said don't you think he's a little young.
I replied at the cashier and my wifes amusement:
I feel that he's the right age and that under the direct supervision of a qualified adult (ME) that has been shooting since I was about his age than it is perfectly safe for him to shoot this gun. That is my job and responsibility as a parent to ensure he is supervised and learns the right way.

The lady huffed and walked off...

Schools need this type of reallity check.. They need to be told hey it's my kid I have direct supervision and it's our job as parents to be involved and have say in your rash and biased rules.
We pay you to educate our kids not chastize or cast out children for playing a game that is harmless just because it ain't your cup of tea

I agree, with 86Ram, those guys have gone to far, but on the other hand, this has been slowly sneaking up on us, when there was a few people that had there PC views on a lot of things, some guys just let it slide, that was a mistake, now look at us, we're fighting for our rights now when we should have just kept at it in the first place. i'm not blameing anyone for this, cause we all let things go sometimes. but we just need to keep our rights as much as we can.
