Q:
So through a series of events, I have a closet that is empty. No clothes in it. What I don't have is a gun safe. I was thinking about beefing up the door and hinges and building a few gun racks. Good idea?

I know a guy who did that, works pretty slick except he wants the closet back for the 3 year to have a closet. He's putting on an addition due to the fact he dosen't want his little kid to be in the bedroom that the gun safe is in, even if it is locked. Don't know if this pertains to you or not.

Great idea. I have a friend who did it with a small walk-in closet. When it was finished, we called it "the armory." It had a small bench for cleaning and other work along with plenty of rack space. Make sure you put in a light if it doesn't already have one. If you're feeling really ambitious, you can even get a key pad deadbolt so you don't have to worry about a key.

I would get a gun safe instead. You'll be able to keep it if you move and it will offer more protection from fire, theft etc. But make sure it fits before you buy it. I bought a fatboy jr and im just now getting it in my house (3 or 4 months later) because i had to find a place for it. But if you go the gun safe route buy liberty.

there are worse things to use a closet for. like storing 30 pairs of shoes.

For the time being, it's an economical and temporary solution. If you want to protect your guns for sure, get a safe.

Good idea but not as secure as a gun safe.

It would look cool, but not safe during a fire. It really depends on how concerned you are about the protection of your guns.
