Q:
Well, after 14 years of being a perfect dog I finally got the cojones together and had Romeo my German Shepard put to sleep. I've had some crappy situations in my life the last few years but this is sure on the top. Poor guy was just in to much pain. My wife doesn't know yet, I promised not to tell her when I did it. Now my Lab Sam is looking for Romeo thru the entire house...Sure does suck

I know the pain, had to put my sons 17 year old Pickapoo to sleep dec. The memories and the pain will never fade. We can rest better knowing we do the right thing by putting an end to an painful and sometimes miserable existence. I hated taking her to the vet, but know she's better now. Worse part is my 4 year old grandson is taking her passing hard.

hengst,

Brother, we feel your pain. So do the other dogs in "the pack". Everytime one of ours has passed away, the others act weird and grieve for a long time. Tough but equally correct decisions are sometimes very painful. Lucky we don't have to do it too often.

We lost 3 in 2007. That was a bad year. All our current ones are young(ish) now. I have another decade before I have to go through it again.

Just love the ones you still have.

I am sorry to learn that was necessary, but I understand. I had to make that decision for our dog, but I didn't want her to live in pain. My children were convinced I was a hard-hearted SOB, and I explained that she deserved better than a sentence of pain that she didn't understand and for which there was no hope of recovery, and I commented to my daughter, "You may have to make the same decision for me someday. By that time, I think you'll better understand it."
A good dog is part of the family, and there's no "good" time for a loss like that. I hope time passes quickly for you, and I'm glad you have another good dog.
All the best,
Ed

With my first dog ever we had to make the decision to put her down but made it too late. At 16 she had pretty advanced cancer and couldn't keep down her food, but she was still happy as ever always wagging her tail and being perky around the house. We thought she was telling us to keep her around and that she would pull through that stage. It is the decision I will regret for the rest of my life. She ended up dying in my arms as I hugged her close after she let out a couple real soft whines, telling me it was her time to go. And this was 2 weeks after she stopped eating. She would eat intermittently, and some days it looked like she would pull through, but it was heart breaking to watch. I know she was in a lot of pain, but I was very torn, I couldn't see putting down a dog that still had the will to live. After she died in my arms I took it real hard, knowing that she was in a lot of pain for the last couple weeks of her life, and that I let her go on like that. Looking back though I don't know if I could have brought myself to do anything different. These tough decisions never have a right answer. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family.

I terribly sorry about your loss. There's no better companion that a good dog.

Thanks alot everyone.. thanks for sharing..it is helpful to read of others experience and see the similarities..Eases the conscience..One thing that we all know is, being a good friend/master means also to do what is right when it is neccessary..I probably waited a few months longer than I should have but that "will to live" in Romeo (yes he was a ladies man) was huge..Well back to work and tonight help the wife she will take it hard even though she knows I did it it was the question of when....Thanks again

hengst,
Sorry for your loss and Rest In Peace Romeo..
Since we live a lot longer than our pets, it stands to reason that we will, at some time or another, come face to face with losing one. Whether you know it's coming or it's unexpected, it is a sad and emotional time..
Don't be afraid to get a new pet right away. There is nothing like a new dog to make you laugh and smile...even when it's the last thing you feel like doing. Consider adopting from an animal shelter or rescue group (petfinder.com is a great way to find pets, shelters, and rescue groups)!!!

hengst, so sorry for ya. I'm going through the "back and forth" right now w/ my 13 yr. old Shepherd Mojo. It's horrible to watch, but he's still my 'baby boy', and as of yet, I can't bring myself to put him down. His back hips are virtually gone, and if any of the other dogs so much as brush by him, he falls down pitifully. God was he somethin' in his prime though! Pure white, 120 pounds, scare the livin sh** outta anybody who came close to the house. After that long as the 'family protector', it just seems wrong to cut his life off. Or maybe it's wrong to let him suffer in pain? And THAT'S my 'back and forth".

As a lifetime hunting dog owner, I am unlucky enough to say that I have only had to be in your shoes once. All the other dogs died suddenly without assistance after full lives and in fairly good health. The best suggestion I can give you is to get back in the saddle as soon as possible. A pup will bring a new light into your lives - and into your other dog's life as well. Your old dog would not want you folks to suffer. He will be happy if you are happy. He also knows that you will never stop loving him even if you get a new pup.

Wish I could go buy a new son to replace my boy who died at Christmas. I know it's breaking his heart to see us suffer this way but it is a cross that has to be born. Eventually it will get lighter. You have a way out. Go for it.

Sorry for your loss. Nothing worse than losing an old companion. Lost my lab last year and my younger lab, the daughter, kept looking for her mom for about a week and would whine and cry, it was one of the most heartbreaking things ever. Hopefully your lab will stop looking around after a week or two, thats how long it took mine. Just give him lots of attention it'll help them get over it faster.
