Q:
What do you think is the perfect shot on an elk or deer. I like to try and hit them in the lungs and break their back. This way they will die and they won't go anywhere. It works good when your elk is going to run into thick twisted timber if you hit him just in the lungs or heart.

Heart/Lungs is the best shot. Can't breath/pump blood you won't go far.
The high shoulder shot is the best. The animal usually drops in its tracks, but you must make sure you have the right angle. Quartering to you is the best.

Not saying this is the best shot, just throwing it out there. I've shot quite a few elk in my day, and one thing I've noticed is if you hit them in the neck, they don't move after that. Anyone else noticed this?
Personally I shoot for the Heart/lungs but I try and break the shoulder while I'm at it.
Not many people are good at neck shots at long range, if your very close ok.
I like heart and neck shots. Puts them down real quick
I agree with Big O. Aim for the heart. If you miss the heart you still get both lungs. I hit a deer in the spine with a muzzleloader, but only because I missed high. It dropped where it stood. I wouldn't aim for the spine though--miss high by an inch & you miss. It also messes up the backstrap.
If we are talking for meat purposes and deer, I go for headshots. They aint goin nowhere and you aint wasting any meet unless you are a brain eater (not recomended). If you want to preserve the head, go for a heart/lung shot.
I "pulled" a spine shot with a M/L once too seadog !
When the "smoke" cleared, thought I missed ! Till I looked and there he(nubbin buck) was ! Man it tore up som good "chili meat " !
heart/lung and shoulder shot, or if it is a doe or cow within reasonable range, head shot for sure. it drops in its tracks and it the body cavity doesnt fill up with blood, and with my experience the meat tastes much better that way.
I don't necessarily disagree with the quartering toward you shot, my deer was shot that way I took both the lungs and the top part of the heart off, and damaging nothing else. That deer didn't even move a inch from where I shot.
put the crosshairs on or behind the shoulder and squeeze the trigger
