Q:
does anyone have any tips on tanning(fleshing, salting, pickling, neutralizing, oiling, and tools to use) a deer hide? im tryin it for the first time. what should i do and what shouldnt i do? any advice works.

You can go and buy a tanning kit at a sports store or leather store.

Get some books from your local library on the subject.

i bought a van dykes tanning kit from cabelas. the instructons dont tell you real well what tools to use or how to do stuff like fleshing, scraping, or stretching the hide.

My buddy used to do it alot. He had a kit he bought. Would recoment that. He would tack the hide to a piece of plywood once treated and let it sit and dry in the shed over the winter. He made some nice skins! Takes some time and practice.

yeah have some good room to work and let set and sharp knives. definitely buy a kit to do it some of the stuff is alittle hard to come by separately. it ends up saving money and is cleaner. buy it before you kill the animal hide care starts from the killing of the animal.
