We've got 13 beagles that we hunt and 8 of which are pups ranging from 8 months-11 months old. The're from good stock and we usually take the pups with the older dogs and they just seem to learn from them what they're supposed to do. You can buy a training ball that you put a rabbit in and then the dog chases it, or you could probably get one of those hamster balls and get a fresh rabbit fur and throw it out and let em run it. But hey, a good squirrel dog aint a bad thing either. Hope this helps you

If rabbits are around his instincts should kick in, but you could also get some rabbit fur, maybe somebody's rabbit foot, and work with that ... instincts will kick in

If you kill a rabbit and feed the dog the liver and heart and kidneys what with him seeing you take it out of the cavity - and raw is the way to go - you will really get him going

I'm going with Elmer it has worked for me. But to have a multiple purpose dog ,How is he going to know which you choose to hunt at any given time? The dog may be confused and run the first hot track that it hits.I believe you will overcome this small problems just remember to have fun and take your time with the dog. They can get shy if scolded to harshly.

rlowe is on the mark. You can get the training smell stuff (here at Gander) and they'll recognize it pretty quick.

But 'bama has a point I've seen my girl do. If she can track different game, and she takes off with her nose on the ground, which one is she after? Of course, usually a squirrel or a rabbit either is okay.
