Q:
I'd like to get into smoking.... meat and fish that is. Any recommendations on a good smoker for someone that's never tried it. Price range would be low to medium range. Thanks!

Not sure exactly where in Va. you're located but I think I saw smokers in Gander Mt. in Winchester recently.

I have a verticle water smoker made by masterbuilt from cabelas. It cost me about 175 and is a good unit for a beginner. Easy to assemble and use. It runs off of propane so it is easy to adjust the temp.

The Good One smoker is one of the top competition smokers on the circuit. This one, the Trail Boss Smoker(Model 60T), is the largest of these smokers. Very heavy and solid, this charcoal smoker has incredibly precise temperature control via several "spinner" vents that not only let you set the temperature exactly where you want but let you find out how many turns it takes to get there so you can set it every time. With a removable ash pan, cooking grates and a built in grease drain this unit is to clean. The Good One is amazingly versatile since it can smoke and grill at the same time, but can also be used as an oven!!!

Sams Club, bass pro, Gander Mtn and walmart. I bought a 70. steel charcoal smoker adn added an electric element to mine for a total of 110, it works ok. A friend of mine has smoked in a cardboard box in his garage using an single electric burner bought at walmart for 10.oo and added a digital thermastat for 5.00 and has put out some really great jerky from this high dollar . I had an uncle that built a 4 foot x 4 foot x 8 foot plyood wlk in smoker that he used for years and years. It depends on how much and how long you want to smoke. A bit of jerky and a brisket now and then a 50 charcoal smoker wil work.

I think you want to make smoked meat like bacon am I right? Most folks think you want to bar-be-que. If so stay away from big chief-they are POS. For a few dollars more you can get a masterbuilt electric smoker that does a good job and is much better than big chief. MB is solidly built, insulated, has much better racks and you can add chips without opening the door. Got mine on sale at Cabelas. The big Chief is flimsy, uninsulated, has to be opened to add chips and the burner quit after a few months use.
Go to Walmart and buy a good supply of thick sliced Walmart brand bacon. Smoke it 8 hours with apple chips for the best bacon you ever tasted. Just keep the thermostat set low so the bacon doesn't render. Use the fine cut apple chips that do not have bark in them. That IMO is the best smoker for the money bar none.

Cgull your friend is lucky he hasn't burned down the house. I built a plywood smoker to smoke Salmon when we lived in AK. One day it caught fire and burned. Fortunately it was outside.

007, Winchester is close enough I'll give them a call and see what they have still, or the one in Roanoke. JoeKidd thanks for that website that helped.
Del in KS. Yeah your right, bbq is nice but I want to smoke, trout, venison, and fowl more so than beef and pork. I'll look into the MB smoker.
Rudy... "The Good One" seems pricey but I'll check it out I need a new grill anyways so if I can get all of that in one package it might be worth it.
Buckeye.... does the Propane get expensive?
And thanks to the rest of you all for your input and ideas they all helped.

No it doesn't you could just use it it light the charcoal and then shut it off. It is also useful to bring the temp back up quick if you need to open it up.
