Q:
It's been a while since the last update on Wesley so for inquiring minds here goes. This morning Billy D and yours truly loaded the Tundra with Jill, Buck, puppies and gear. We picked up Wesley at 0600 am and drove to Greeley, KS. There we attended all day hunter safety classes and the kids got to shoot pen raised pheasants over the dogs. It was a blast for everyone. Jill, Buck and several other dogs got a good pre-season tune-up. The kids not only got shooting but classes on muzzleloaders, archery, hunter ethics, and such things as how to ask for permission to hunt on private property. The thing that really got my attention was the walk thru course they had set up. Kids walk a trail thru field and woods with non-functional guns and are presented with situations and then questioned about what they would do. Example a decoy of a large buck comes into view standing on the crest of a hill. What do you do as a deer hunter? A hen pheasant flushes (it's a painting that pops up) shoot or not? A rooster flushes, did you shoot without seeing the other hunter in the background. The birds were wrapped in foil with vegetables and cooked over coals, yum. Shortly after returning home the phone rang and it was Wesley's mom calling to thank us for giving the kid another great memory. Wes shot the first 2 rooster pheasants of his life. you gents did a lot to make it happen, give yourselves a pat on the back. BTW we saw another hog of a buck standing at the edge of a corn field early this morning. The big 8 pt gave all of us a good look then headed for a nearby creek bottom.
