Q:
Just finished reading "The case for Enough Gun Elk Cartridges" by Bryse Towsley in the SEP issue of American hunter. He convinced me to leave the 25-06 at home. I will be going west with Bee, my 350 Remington Magnum and a 338-06. What say you about elk rifles?

I like your choices. As you probably know, I love a 25-06 but it is nice to have even more than you need for elk. Good luck on your hunt.
I dunno.
After looking at DakotaMan's targets, this one is very appealing...

Pressed the button too son, sorry.
EXTRA Good Luck! on your hunt, I would pick the 338/06
and pack the 350Rem Mag and sell it and buy a 280 Rem
LOL Bee show him the way.
Sounds like you have good choices. I would carry whichever is lighter.
A little background as to my elk hunting experience. Have killed 35 bulls and don't keep a record of cows, but quite a few. Being a gun nut have used many different calibers over the decades. As I recall here is the list. 243, 257 Ackley, 270, 280, 30 06, 300 Win Mag, 300 Weatherby, 35 Whelan, 357 Norma, 338 Win Mag, and 375 H & H., 11 in all. Hands down favorites 300 Win Mag and 338 Win Mag.
Any caliber 7mm or higher with high quality bullets will do the trick. Your first shot is your best one, use it wisely.
Del, wish I was going with you and Bee. Best of luck and kindest regards.
Happy, you are the man! Some day I would love to hear your stories. I am still dreaming of elk hunting one day but will probably never get to do so. Therefore I appreciate your stories as they fuel my dreams... thanks.
Del a 270Win or 270 WBY with a 150gr Barnes or Partion will work. But I do like your choices plenty of penatration. I never did like the 25.06 and never will but each to thier own. I think a .06 with a good Nosler or Barnes in 165 or 180 would work great to, but Happy has more elk under his belt than I so head to his word. Happy glad your back when is your next adventure?
idduckhntr,
Applied for over 20 tags here in the states and did not draw one. That is a first, usually something falls my way. As of now, my next adventure will be Uganda for 21 days next year for Nile buffalo, Nile bushbuck, Uganda Kob, Sitatunga, and various other critters only found in Uganda which just reopened this year.
Dell,
You made a good decision. Both rifles are great, the 338-06 might be best because of distance.
Years ago I read an article from Jim Zumbo about hunting elk. He said the first 19 elk he ever killed he used a 30-06, then he decided to switch to a .338 Win.
Happy, Wish you were going with us too! You are welcome to hunt turkeys with us come April. We had the best season ever last Spring.
The late Jack O'Connor said that his .270 was all he ever needed for elk, but I think the modern consensus would favor a bit more gun. Happy's list includes the .243, but both of his favorites deliver considerably more energy.
Happy hope you have a good hunt, I am going to try to fill a late cow tag with what time I have. Wife back in school and I am going back this winter.
I hope you and Bee have a great time and take home some meat and antlers. Don't forget the cameras! Say, doesn't Bee also have a .338-06?
MLH, you sir are correct! and we always take cameras.
99explorer,
Interestingly, both bulls I killed with my 270 using O'Connor's favorite 130 grain Nosler Partitions required additional shots even though hit properly with the first round. Hasten to add I feel it was a fluke as the autopsy showed the bullets performed well. Sometimes the animal just does not know it is dead.
I know, I know, should have used a heavier bullet.
Thanks for the compliments, I am a little embarrassed. Kindest Regards to all
Leave the rifles at home Del, You got a Z7. Use that with some decently heavy arrows. Then you will be rockin!
I believe Jim Zumbo used a .30-06 for his first teen-odd elk kills and switched to a 7mm Rem Mag for nearly 20 years , then to a .300 Rem SAUM in a long barreled Model 7 stainless under sponsorship from Remington before the cowards ditched him over the black rifle fiasco. I have read reams of Jim's writing and I never recall him favoring a .338 Win Mag. I could be wrong, but you will have to quote a source. I could email Jim for a verification if required.
Del, I'm in agreement with lovetohunt!! Get close enough he's blowin snot on you.. then let a 400gr tipped in 125gr death. Then you'll have some stories. haha.
I talk big but my first ever elk hunt was supposed to be this year in Western CO and now it's getting delayed to next year :-( But I will be rifle hunting in hopes of bringing home something. If one wanders by me at 10 yards I'm gonna cry though.
Hands down the Colonel built the best Elk cartridge ever. The .35 Whelen
Happy answered the question quite adequately since, like with deer, there is no single correct response.
Del I meant to add that I would take the 338-06 since I understand that brass is horrendously expensive for the .350 mag. Either would be adequate. I would make myself be proficient out to 400 yards and be sure to shoot on windy days. I can't wait to see your bull. Don't wait on mine as I still think the wolves have about done us in here in NW Wyoming. Maybe I should look elsewhere or at least to the southern portion of the state for better elk choices. This is heart rendering since my piece of Wyoming used to be among the best in the US. Old Jack, Carmichel, Les Bowman, Mike Walker, Townsend Whelen, Warren Page, Bob Milek, Jimmy Doolittle, Roy Rogers, the seven Mercury Astronauts and even David Petzal used to ride and hunt on the same trails I use. Well at least Zumbo is still here.
Ish, 350 brass is expensive and right now nobody (even Midway) seems to have any. I have brass backordered at Midway. Just finished reading some of Jack's stories of Wyoming. Dang shame the wolves and bears are killing off the elk and deer. I would love to share a camp with you, Happy, Wam, and Bee. Looks like I might get half of that wish this fall if things turn out.
Del
I am in Alabama right now, but I will check Kesselring's when I get home or send Justin by to check on .350 Rem Mag tomorrow since I don't get home until Sunday P.M. How much do you want if they have it?
WAM
One box of 20 would do me until Midway delivers. Right now I have about 30 total, using them for load developement. Prefer to go hunting with fresh loads in new brass is all. Guess it's not really an emergency. Not sure how my supply of 350 brass got so low. I have plenty of brass for the 338-06
I have 100 on backorder which will last me nearly forever. You don't shoot that gun for fun much.
Jim in MO The 350 with 200 gr Barnes TSX bullets loaded to 2925 fps are within an inch of the 338 210 Barns at 300 yds according to the tables in the back of Barnes manual.
Del,
I'll check tomorrow and have Justin go by and pick up 20 if they have them. I have about wore out the 20 load development case I use for the Weatherby. Some have been some pretty warm loads so I am going to toss them and load a box of 20 in brand new Weatherby brass for the hunt too.
Thank you sir! You are a gentleman and a scholar.
SD and Love, I too would be overjoyed to take a bull with my Z-7 however, first things first. Let's get one under my belt with a rifle for starters. Whacked a moose with the 350 and a caribou with the 300 WBY. Also a couple bears but alas no luck with the Wapiti so far.
Looking forward to our Elk Hunt. PB and I had dinner with WAM in Atlanta Wednesday. He is quite the gentleman and even picked up the tab! I have had some bedding problems with the .338-06. I'm working to correct them. Hope it is back on it's feet for CO. Have loads developed for the .300 WSM and my .30/06 as a back up.
Del, Ya thats a valid point. If I ever get an Elk tag I'll proly use a rifle to. It would be hard for me to not use my bow though.
Wa hunter,
You may be correct on the 7mm. It was in the 80's when he wrote for the cowardly mag that fired him (he really should have held his tongue), and the more I think of it I probably was wrong because I remember thinking why would he switch to that caliber? Good call.
Jim
I know Zumbo casually and have read his stuff for years. I did not intend to be a wise a$$, just stating the facts as I knew them. I won't be renewing my OL subscription either. I got a screaming deal on a 5 year subscription which expires at the end of DEC/JAN so there was little incentive to just cancel it. Now that Gentleman Jim is gone also, adios MF to Outdoor Life. I won't ever buy another Remington firearm until they apologize to Zumbo and make it right. Frig 'em. There are plenty of other excellent rifles out there, although I love my Remington rifles and shotguns.
I agree that he could have held his fire on the black rifle issue, but WTH, it was quite the innocent remark.
Glad he had more luck than I did convincing folks that 25-06 is too light. .350 may be a bit overkill. Good old 30-06 will do the job fine. Look at all those elk in my profile. All killed with 30-06. And there's a couple more that aren't in the gallery yet.
Nah, the folks that tout the mouseguns for elk are more interested in bragging about their shooting skills than killing elk. They will never be convinced of their err.
