Savage has one for $469 at Cabela's. Savage makes pretty good guns and the reviews on the Savage are glowing. http://www.cabelas.com/catalog/product.jsp?productId=709944#BVRRWidgetID. If money is not an issue, there is no better gun than the Tar Hunt. It is the Rolls Royce of bolt action slug guns. You can buy old Marlin bolt action smoothbore shotguns for cheap. They were featured a couple years ago in the 50 best and worst guns of all time. They were listed under the worst because of their lack of practicality for bird hunting. With their 36" barrel you'd think they'll throw a rifled slug pretty good though.

hunt-fish-sleep hit the nail on the head with his above post. For the money, you won't find a better slug gun than the 220F.

I highly recommend the Mossberg 695. Yes, it's discontinued, yes it's uglier than sin, and yes, it will kill deer out to 160+ yards all day long with Lightfield slugs, and that's with the cheap 4x scope that typically comes with it.

This is a working gun, so don't expect the fit and finish to be stellar, but hey, I like a gun that I can use and abuse and have it still put the slug where I want it when I pull the trigger.

I bought mine brand new in the last year of production (03-ish?) and have run hundreds of rounds through it, and consistently had 3-shot groups where the holes overlapped at 100 yards with Lightfield Hybred EXPs.

The 695 will run about $200-275 used (with the scope), which is significantly less than the Savage offering which means more $ to buy slugs or put a BDC scope on it to get you out to 200 yards. If you you insist on buying new, of course the Savage 212/220 is the way to go.

I have one of those old Mossberg bolt actions down in my gun cabinet. Been storing it for my father-in-law since 1994 and if he doesn't come pick it up soon, it's going to the Mountie's furnace. That jerk is trying to steal my daughter's inheritance. If that gun gets scrapped I don't think it would be any great loss to the gun world. Damn thing beats the crap out of me. I shot it a couple of times for the heck of it. Ugh!
