Your scent, the smoke from a campfire or anything that is carried by the wind floats downwind from its source, unless it has the physical or mechanical ability to make headway against the wind. If the wind is blowing directly in your face, you are facing upwind. Smoke or scent is being blown downwind to you. Once beyond you, that smoke is being blown downwind past you. I hope this helps.

1.)Down Wind = The wind is blowing away from you. You are moving with the direction of the wind/current.

2.)Upwind = Toward or against the wind or the direction from which it is blowing. You are moving into/against the wind/current. It is in your face.

If a deer is downwind of you, he'll smell you, if he's upwind of you, he won't smell you. You may be able to smell him if he's upwind!

Just remember to keep the wind in your face when hunting. Remember when a canyon heats up the air will rise out of it and as it cools the air will sink into the canyon. Remember on the lee side of a hill there is no good wind. Stay off the lee side of hills.

Never, ever, ever, ever forget the wind when hunting.

Wind will also follow tree breaks and contours in the earth. Regardless of whether you can feel it or not the wind is always blowing. Carry a little bottle of powder into the woods and give a hefty spray and watch what it does. Wind can blow in several directions at once.
