Q:
Ok so i want to get a jeep as my first vehicle because it has good gas mileage and good for offroading to get to the best hunting spots, the only problem is, where to i put my game once i kill it to haul it out and check it in? I plan on getting a cargo carrier to attach to the hitch to strap the game onto that. So my question is, Does the game need to be out of sight of the public? I wouldn't want to get pulled over because i have a bleeding monster whitetail in plain view. Do i need to cover it or what?

Throw your deer in the backseat then hose it out when you get home. It's a Jeep!
We drive home with them strapped to the back all the time. All depends on how you feel about it and if you can handle a couple dirty looks on the way home (always more thumbs ups though). Legally (in MI) you don't have to cover it up.
Laws on game vary state to state, and jeeps don't get good mileage.
Haha Buckhunter your hilarious, there is no way im putting dead game in the back seat unless it is like small game in a garbage bag. But good try.
I use a cargo carrier at times, too. Be sure to wrap it up completely (after it has cooled) to keep the road grime and exhaust fumes off it.
LOL
Good luck manhandling a real deer onto the back seat, unless you have the top off. Most of the deer I get requires 2 or 3 guys to lift it onto a trailer or 4 wheeler. Try that with a 250 pounder.
Let me know which JEEP get good mileage. I want one.
Ok Jeeps don't get "great" mileage but its definately better than my grandpa's F-250.
WA Mtnhunter, I have been hit the weight room and pumping the iron so I can get that monster onto the carrier. NOT. I might just have to back down a hill and roll it onto the carrier, whatever it takes to show it off.
LOL I'm just a scrawny old guy, so heaving the bruisers up anywhere is OUT for me!
Those hitch mounted carriers are low enough to maybe get one end up and tied off and then the other end. You might also consider a small tarp to keep the road dirt off your prize.
I'm with you, if I get a big boy, I'll figure out a way to get him back to camp. It took three of us to get my last buck in 2007 up onto the rear rack of my Foreman ATV, but that is pretty high up off the ground.
i have the same problem with my old blazer.
it was a gift from my mother when she got a mustang.
it had a leather interior and was a womens car.
i used a cargo carrier for 3 years. killed multiple deer, pigs, and other game.
i cover the deer but for some reason coons, fox, coyote and other " nusiance" animals.
Yea if all else fails I will have to strap him to a mattress and drag him off
Make sure your deer is secure, especially the rack.
I know of a friend that had a nice 10-pointer and the rack dragged for a couple of miles and the rack was demolished!
WA Mtnhunter, you gave me a great idea. Just cover it up with a tarp. DUH
Good point, 2Poppa, especially late in the season when they begin to drop the headgear
In VT back in the day you would see more deer strapped across the hoods of Studebakers than you can imagine.
I think you'd have to check your area game laws first. I used to throw mine on the back of a utility trailer that was just as open as a cargo carrier you hook in your receiver. WA Mtnhunter, I've loaded every deer I've killed on the back of my 4-wheeler, 70lb does to 220lb bucks. I drag them right up to the back of the 4-wheeler then get on the back rack, bend over the back and stand up, pulling it up until it is on the rack.
All you have to do is drag it behind you when your going home...Nobody will think anything of a jeep dragging a 10 pt.
Oh, and my brother-in-law's Jeep wrangler gets the same mileage as my F-250....12.5-13 mpg.
In my state the game needs to be visible from yoru vehicle anyways...pretty much so if a game warden sees it he will pull you over and check your tag...I do understand where your coming from though different areas have more of a "non-hunting" public and they may call and complain...where im from people go out of their way to display their new kill and show off
Taylor,
No joke about putting dead animals in the back. I had a Jeep load of dead coyotes just last week. It all washes out and what doesn't is just a fond reminder of a good kill. Com'on man, It's a Jeep thing!
In MI, since we do not have a mandatory check in for our deer, part of the DNR's method for estimating numbers taken by hunters is to count them on cars/trucks from bridges.
Also, make sure you check and compare insurance prices for Jeeps..I wanted to get one too but after my parents saw how much more it would be to insure it..that idea was shot down..

That sounds like a surefire way for me to end up in the orthopedic surgeon's office. Standing on the back rack of a quad and reaching over and pulling a buck up onto the rack doesn't sound easy. Unless you're a cast iron stud!
I agree..even if you have a method down packed of doing it, it only takes one wrong twist and your out for a good while
what about purchasing a small trailer? any trailer should work (not camping trailers like the ones you could use for brush or the flat bed ones for snowmobiles would be even better) we were told to keep any kill out of sight from the public here in ct seeing as most of us dont hunt or have ever even shot a gun
oh and go used because there is no need to waste money to drag a deer out and the trailer you wont have to worry about the deer falling off plus it will be lower to the ground so wont be as hard to get the deer onto. even buil a ramp and just drag it on this probably wont be any more expensive than your idea if you look in the right places
Not many jeeps get good gas mileage. I t is illegal to transport a deer that is not in plain sight here in WI. Must be able to see a part of it. I say let them complain. i had a buck and a doe in the bed of my pick up once and drove right through a neighborhood that is notorious for having anti's. did not have to it was out of my way, but felt I owed it to them. I just smiled as I drove through.
Tarps are cheap. Good luck and good hunting.
Hard to hide a 6x6 bull elk in a pickup! LOL
Wa Mtnhunter, I never said it was easy. I do it this way to keep blood off my clothes just in case I stop for a bite or gas on the way to the processer. I have just picked them up and wrestled them on but I get more blood on me that way. I don't think many or any of the guys I hunt with can load them the way I do. I am getting older and I'm not sure how many more years I'll be able to pull off feats of strength like that. My wife always tells me I'm not a kid anymore, even though I act like one most of the time.
Whether or not you animal needs to be out of sight depends on the laws and the attitude of people in the area you are in. Around here people strap them up for all to see, and park on main to show to everyone....If getting a jeep, be careful on the highway, have had several friends roll them down the road taking a corner to fast....
My Wrangler gets poor mileage, but it hardly ever gets off the back roads. It's a '94, has no back seat, no carpet and the tarp goes under the deer instead of over so the blood doesn't get into unwelcome places. As for loading, I have a ring fastened to the roll bar and use a flat strap pulley system (made by Gorilla Tree Stands) to hoist in the fat ones that I can't lift.
just cover it up so nobody complains
You can rip all the carpet up, take the back seats out and then spray the inside with a truck liner. This will also fix the common rust problem that jeeps have. Also if its a wrangler I would suggest getting a top with tinted windows so you don't have to worry about people seeing your kill.
It doesn't need to be out of view in Michigan. It is the norm to see the deer here.
I had an 88 Jeep Wrangler and I trade it in with my 92 Ford F-150!!!
