If I wanted to wear something for the rest of my life I think I'd know what that thing was. Do you want a tattoo for the sake of having a tattoo, or is there some statement that you need to make, and if so you should already know what that statement is. If you must, then choose well. Once its there you're stuck with it. Try to visualize what it will look like when the skin its on is all wrinkled.
Tattoos go back thousands of years. They cross all cultural and economic classes. They represent a moment of life that can never be forgotten. Sort of like a venereal disease.
I think Dave & 99 hit it on the head as part of impulse buying. All I can add is the health part. Tattoos are ink in the middle layer of skin with colors derived from heavy metals. These are in a powder form mixed with Listerine. One of my sons friends got a bad case of recurring boils. Evidently someone back washed into the bottle. As far as the ink goes it will blur in time. If you want it lasered off figure about triple the price of the tattoo. Add that to the fact that all these metal oxides don't scab off but are filtered from your blood by your liver and kidneys. Well you see were I'm going. Depending on your home state, the shop might be licensed; but the "artist" might not be. All in all it's your choice and your life.
"Poor Impulse Control" has always been one of my favorites. A nice Germanic script really does it justice.
Seriously though, if you get one it should be something you are sure will be part of your life till you're done. The things that are really important in life don't always lend themselves to that form of expression. Think long and hard before you brand yourself.
Go for it. It will confirm your intelligence and maturity to the rest of the world. Get one on each arm and one to match on the back of your neck. Those are real cool, dude!
having a bunch on non people who actually know you picking out soemthing like this is dumb.
Wheter it be in a forearm, back, what ever place of your body it is forever.
My sis-n-law is paying 1200.00 for laser removal for a 50.00 tattoo from when she was an idiot with an idiot boyfriend. Now she is a hottie nurse with a dumb tattoo on her ankle. Once she secured her first job, she fiananced this laser operation.
That being said, I have plenty. Partially sleeved on both arms, parts of back and more. AND these are mine, I designed, I got with well known artist in my area or while in Army life. THESE are mine, I like them, I do not see it as a sexual diesease. I made a choice, not drunk, not rash, thought about much and saved my money. One (newer) is a cover up of some junk I got when I was young, and I incorporated my duaghters name.
Do what you got to do. Even when people do things that are dumb, they have to live with those actions forever.
Back in 2001 We all got Tats after 9/11 not the best Idea But. I have the American flag with the Statue of Liberty in Frount standing tall and proud, the date 9/11/01 the words "lets Roll" on my right sholder.
With the New inks thay can be removed up to 5/Years??
think real HARD befor you ink up!
well, I wasn't expecting anything differently. No i'm not trying to make a statement or fit in with the crowd, I want something to show that I love hunting, fishing and the outdoors, and this country. I'm not getting a huge sleeve of this or anything I want something simple on the bottom of my arm with a flag and possibly a fish and buck coming out both sides.
Here's a suggestion. Save your money and spend it on something less painful that you won't regret later in life. Friend of mine got his arms done when he was 18 or 19. Today is his mid-50's he regrets it every day. Too, how do you know that what you like today will still appeal to you 20 years down the road? Finally, what looks cool today while your skin is healthy will probably look like a wet comic book when you age. Save your money and put it on a quality firearm or bow.
Agree w/99explorer, if you're dead set on gettng one, put where it can be covered should you not want to "advertise". I ran a business for over 30 years and can tell you if someone applied for a job and had tats that couldnt be covered, they were not getting hired. The most ridiculous 1 I've seen was a young moron who shaved his head and had a bullet hole on both temples, on one side an entry and the other side an exit wound.
Kenton, your bullet hole guy is proof that every man is assured of the inalienable right to look stupid at least once in life. Where do these people come from????????
As one who has experienced buyer's remorse for about 5 years, I would say don't do it. But, if you are intent on getting a tattoo you really should have thought about what it is going to be and determine if you want to be associated with that particular statement for the entirety of your physical life. The advice about getting it where it can be covered is well heeded. I can cover mine so I haven't done all the creams, salves, lighteners, whatever - or laser removal - but looking back, I would have been well served to have saved that $65 and bought some broadheads or bullets.
Do it only for yourself, never out of spite or for any other reason. Design it yourself, you can always have the artist "clean" it up. If you decide on something, wait a year. If you still want it at the end of that time, it will not just be snap decision.
Well this will probably get me some -1's. Yes it's permanent.....I have got 8 of them, got my first one when I was 18 and i'm 41 now and I don't regret any of them. I'll be getting a couple more soon, one will be the name and date of the best friend I just buried. Some people do get them when they aren't thinking straight and might later regret them. Tats are an expression, and you should think it thru before you get one, but if you want one and your over 18 don't worry about what anyone else thinks. That's a lot of the problem with the world these days is that people worry to much about what someone else will think, and some people always want to stick their nose into places that it don't belong. This question wasn't even about what you think about tatoo's it was about what we think would be a good idea for a tat. Anyway, some ideas would be your best dog, a big deer that you shot, ducks or geese if your a duck hunter, mascot of your favorite team, and so on. I've got 3 confederate flags of different styles, one is flag with crossed swords and my wifes name in a banner flyng off the flag pole under the flag, a couple Harley ones, a naked female warrior that a guy did with the face resembling my wife holding a sword that's on my back. There are lots of ideas so just go to a tat shop and look thru their books, you might find several that you like and if it's a good shop they should have someone there that can draw what you like if you find different ones with parts that you want made into one. Anyway, hope this helps
The very first thing that you need to do is find an artist, not just a guy that does tattoos. You need to talk to this person about what you like and what they like. You need to look at examples of their work-pictures of actual tats not just the line drawings. Many artists will gladly take your concept and turn it into their work of art. If they are into what they are doing it will turn out better and when you are 60 you will be more likely to view it a an artful expression of yourself. You also need to consider carefully what you want to represent. I like hunting, hotrods, so on and so forth, but I don't desire permanent alterations on my body to illustrate that. If hunting is your all and everything, if you truly know, honor and do your part to preserve the constitution and those things will never change then get that ink. Here are some ground rules: NEVER, barring the names of your children or dead relatives/ friends have somebody else's name placed on your body. Do not do bands, barring those that have been together for 60 years, because they always break up. Worse yet, is that your tastes may change and then you have to live with a tat that says "bieber fever". Make sure you do not have a permanent mark for a temporary "thing"
The alternative is to get a tattoo that doesn't come right out and say it. Put some hidden meaning into it, or just choose a design that alone says something about your personality. A wonderful, wish-i-had-pictures example is my brother's holy mackerel. It was done by an award wining artist, featured in magazines and shows his irreverent sense of humor. Picture a religious icon like fish with a halo and its fins folded in prayer. It isone of his many beautiful pieces that will not be regretted later (he has some bad ones too from drunken marine corps nights. Hell, so do I)
I have several tatoos. People will look at you differently. Thats how it is deal with it. None of mine do not show when wearing a short sleeve shirt. I highly advise you put it some where it doesnt show in day to day life. Also draw it yourself.Once its there it for life, think about it alot! Lot more expensive and painful to remove one. And HELL yes they hurt. I hope Im still an honorary crusty old dude even though I have tats!
It's easy to get discouraged about it with some of these comments, isn't it? Don't worry about them, who are they to judge?
What you should take away from this is that it is permanent so you better choose wisely. I have a tattoo that took me a year to decide on, and then another year of waiting to ensure that it was what I truely wanted. I have no regrets about what I chose, and even wanted to get another one before it had even finished healing. But here I am almost seven years later with only one tattoo, because I haven't found anything that I want. Yet. Take your time. It sounds like you are on the right track, wanting to make it something that is very personnal to you.
Every time I see my tattoo, I remeber exactly where I was at that time in my life, and why I chose that design. I didn't do it for anybody else, to look cool or impress anybody. It's located where it is easily concealed by a shirt, not because I didn't want to offend the delecate sensibilities of some others that obviously know what is good for me better than I know myself, but because that is where I wanted it.
Good luck in your search. There is a photo gallery somewhere on here with lots of decent outdoor designs, but only use those for ideas. Make it your own.
muskiemaster,
I am seventy two. Most of my friends and associates who proudly acquired tattoos when young wish they had not done so. Keeping that in mind, it's your body suit yourself.
Wow! You guys are a hard bunch for sure. Tell you the truth I would rather see you get inked then push something up your nose or pop a handful of pills. If it gets you through,do it. But here are my suggestions as to what to get... "Your Name" or "Your Girlfriends Name" ,,on your butt.. or a "Rooster on a Hangmans noose 3 " below your knee. With any of these Tattos you could at least make a couple extra dollars to put away to have them removed once you get tried of them. That's all I am gonna say bout that!
P.S. I worked with a good friend {Viking type] who loved motorcycles Harley's specifically. His wife met us on the job. To celebrate their new daughter she had her daughters name tattooed on her side Harley D.. Our boss saw this. He could only say Mike it's a good thing you don't ride a Kawasaki. True story.
If you really want to show that you don't care what other people think, and you don't see any point in getting a tattoo where you could easily hide it, get one of those Mike Tyson facial tattoos.
Of course, you might have to wear a ski mask for job interviews.
tough crowd ya'll are. I don't mind it though, I'm going through with it and in case none of you read the post above I'll say it again this isn't some stupid attempt at showing my maturity or my manhood, I'm doing this because I want it to be something to represent me and what I love to do. So for all of the sarcastic comments keep them coming, there fairly entertaining and not the least bit discouraging, cause with the same way I feel about a tattoo is it's something I believe in and am willing to say it.
I only got one tattoo and that was only cuz the Mrs. was OK with it. Had to get the Eagle Globe and Anchor. Probably shouldnt have gotten it on my forearm, but I like it nonetheless.
Tattoos can be a big mistake, or a gratifying moment in your life. Just don't get a purple wizard like my idiot brother got. Looks horrible.
muskiemaster,
Liked your last post.
I've been through this a couple of times with all above posters staying true to their "advice".
Tattoos are individualistic, both for the one sportin them, and for the one viewin them.
Some will like and admire, some will think you brain dead.
Make yourself happy... nobody else will.
I'll love mine because they're art and please ME.
I almost got an "AIRBORNE above Jump Wings with DEATH BEFORE DISHONOR" below them on my upper arm when I was full of pee and vinegar. Luckily the guy told us to come back when we didn't have quite the load on, so I wimped out and didn't get it. It would probably look like a grease stain on my elbow some 40 years later today.
This girl on Facebook was so proud of her "This to will pass" tatoo she posted it, it ran from her hip up to just under her arm pit, a pretty large tat, all of her friends told her how cool it was, I explained to her that it should be spelled "too" not "to" and she erased the post and unfriended me. Here's your sign, gal. There are places where editing is a must.
assuming your a musky fanatic like myself, I would suggest a musky jumping out of the water with your favorite bait. If you love to musky fish, this tattoo willbe perfect for you

A tattoo is permanent proof of temporary insanity. Get it in an obscure place.
If I wanted to wear something for the rest of my life I think I'd know what that thing was. Ditto for Buck; Like Herpes the gift that keeps giving!!
I got enough scars, scraps and burns, don't need no tattoo!
When you get old, this will look just like Don Knots hanging on a tree!

Don't forget that a tattoo isn't like getting married--a tattoo is permanant.
If you decide to go ahead, get something original, like barbed wire around your arm. Nobody has one of those.

Get a musky tattoo. That would be as good as anything. I don't have tattoos but if you want one go for it.
Put it somewhere it can't be seen by the public...
Do it only for yourself, never out of spite or for any other reason. Design it yourself, you can always have the artist "clean" it up. If you decide on something, wait a year. If you still want it at the end of that time, it will not just be snap decision.
And like others are saying, keep it out of the public eye.
it's your choice to do what you want. just remember that you may have to go for a job interview some day.
What's the since in getting one if your going to hide it.
Hell, so do I)
I agree with some of the above posts if you MUST get a tattoo get it were it can be covered. Maybe on the small of your back below the belt line.
+1 for you Juan and GERG
I aint genst em.just so they aint on me.
muskiemaster,
I am seventy two. Most of my friends and associates who proudly acquired tattoos when young wish they had not done so. Keeping that in mind, it's your body suit yourself.
i think it is taboo for a guy to get a lower back tatoo. i believe only girls get those. just sayin...
James I'm retired and have to have my fun in odd ways. Dumb enough to do one thing dumb enough to do another.
Jamesti
Is that what they call a "tramp stamp"?
Just wonderin'...
Visit a prison and note how many inmates have them.
carl, i hear ya on that.
WAM, i believe you have it correct. i'll have to ask my girlfriend's daughters.
How bout this? Across your bum: "One way, do not enter."
I disagree on the marriage answer, from where I'm from, it is forever, its just takes more work to make it thru the wash, unlike the tatoo.
Ah, to be innocent enough to think all marriages should last forever...
Check out TomRenshaw.com if you are thinking about a wildlife tat.
assuming your a musky fanatic like myself, I would suggest a musky jumping out of the water with your favorite bait. If you love to musky fish, this tattoo willbe perfect for you

Tattoos go back thousands of years. They cross all cultural and economic classes. They represent a moment of life that can never be forgotten. Sort of like a venereal disease.
Go for it. It will confirm your intelligence and maturity to the rest of the world. Get one on each arm and one to match on the back of your neck. Those are real cool, dude!

Don't forget that a tattoo isn't like getting married--a tattoo is permanant.
If you decide to go ahead, get something original, like barbed wire around your arm. Nobody has one of those.
A tattoo is permanent proof of temporary insanity. Get it in an obscure place.
Ditto for Buck; Like Herpes the gift that keeps giving!!

As one who has experienced buyer's remorse for about 5 years, I would say don't do it. I got enough scars, scraps and burns, don't need no tattoo!
When you get old, this will look just like Don Knots hanging on a tree!

most "older" folks do not understand body art.
having a bunch on non people who actually know you picking out soemthing like this is dumb.
P.S. I worked with a good friend {Viking type] who loved motorcycles Harley's specifically. His wife met us on the job. well, I wasn't expecting anything differently.
I aint genst em.just so they aint on me.
