Not today, apparently. I was out from 12 to 4. Acorns, hickory nuts on the ground, but saw no squirrels. There was a gusty breeze, and I think that more than anything else determines squirrel activity.
Well they are getting ready for hibernation right now so now is not a good time, in a few weeks they are gonna be in hibernation, and then in spring they are coming out, they are hungry, and they are running around trying to find food. So if you put out some corn, in a few minutes it will be swarming with squirrels, so you just get out a shotgun and you can cap about five @ one time.
You are right, kyle,(tree) squirrels do not hibernate. And yes, hjohn429, they ARE most active when you are focused on deer.
Today I had a reversal, though. I was hunting for squirrels, without seeing nary a one. I thought I heard a squirrel up in a tree, but as I was trying to get a fix on it, a deer started blowing at me. I kept myself behind some rocks from the noise, and eventually a doe with a 6pt in tow got up and walked off. The buck only moved off when she moved off. Just plain disgusting how some guys will go all to pieces over a girl.
It would be a toss up between early morning and late evening but if i had to choose i would hunt in the evening because in the morning the squirrels tend to nest quick but in the after noon they start moving a couple of hours before dark which gives you a longer period to take a good mess.
as far as hibernation, they don't do that but go into torpor, which means days and days holed up in bad weather. Kicks in hard in winter but not in November too much [in VA]
Funny you should ask this, as I was just thinking about it some time back. Yes, you see a good number on an afternoon/evening hunt, but it seems to me like they're usually in a hurry heading to the nest. I much prefer daylight/morning, plenty of activity but they seem to be more at ease. I have only gotten out once this year and got rained out then, and now the bow beckons, so hopefully one day soon............

Fall and spring, since in fall they're gathering and in spring they are trying to fill up after the winter and also trying to mate

When they are awake. LOL
Most Squirrels are most active during the day time.

Around here they seem to be most active WHEN I AM TRYING TO DEER HUNT! LOL:)
Squirrels hiberate? I seen them all year along at my Grandma's bird feeder.
