Assuming that you have a spark method and nothing else I have always used the fine birch bark fiber rolled together loosely. They will catch any spark and make a good fire. You will certainly have to be ready with other very dry and burnable material to maintain the fire after you get the bark burning. Dry weeds and dry pine branches are good material for this. I never go into the woods without my waterproof matches and several Vaseline soaked strips of cloth in a plastic bag. Very good insurance.

flint sticks work well with any dry shreded tinder. If your lighter runs out of fuel but you still have a spark you can make a prison match. all it is, is a napkin or tissue rolled up and fuzz is picked off your socks and placed in the end which is made into a little funnel. spark into this and it will go right upin flames.

The best way I have found is to always carry a magnesium striker with you. They can start fires when everything is wet and all you need is a little bit of bark and some squaw wood.

Never rely on just one means of making flame. Only with tinder and kindling can flame become fire. Keep your tinder dry and loose so lots of air can get to it. Wood picked up off the ground is not as dry as dead wood broken off a tree. After the tinder the first kindling should be thinner than a pencil. Then once that catches lean pencil sized over the fire, not laid on so it smothers the fire. It needs lots of air. Small kindling burns fast so have all your increasing sizes of wood gathered before lighting the fire.
