Q:
I had oral surgery today at 8:00, 4 wisdom teeth removed and a molar that was "resorbing" (which 95% of the time happens only with trauma, I haven't been in a fight in years!). I cannot open my mouth more than 2cm. I am hoping to go on a trip with friends next Saturday, Lord help me! Any body else have tooth problems I.E. weak teeth, soft teeth? If so what do you do to prevent problems, short of having them all removed.

Have your saliva tested. There's a bacteria that can cause weakness in teeth that leads to cavities etc. Have you been breastfeeding? That can also cause dental problems :P

"Have you been breastfeeding?" That's a loaded question...Hopefully he's not breastfeeding! Or at least maybe he's on the receiving end, LOL.

Pretty sure that user name of his simplifies to something like "bla bla Country Boy"

Well, I knocked/broke four out this past January carrying a 60 lb steel gong down a muddy hill. Feet went out from under me and it landed on my face. I had resorpbtion before the accident and had a root canal for it. Since the accident I've had three other root canals and two crowns put on and I'm still not done. So I know a thing or two about mouth problems and pain. Ibuprofin helps and some sensadine? I think that's what it's called. It can help too. But the best thing you can do is talk to your dentist/endodontist and let them do their thing.

Short of developmental problems, there is no such thing as "soft teeth," and weak teeth are a result of to many fillings, generally. If the resorption was the molar directly in front of the wisdom tooth, the wisdom tooth eruptive process can cause some resorption. If you want to ward off problems in the future, do these things: get everything repaired that your dentist reccomends, floss, brush (correctly) and don't add a bunch of sugar to your diet, especially sipping on soda all day. That's like dumping gas on a fire for decay. Finally, you may be a candidate for some supplemental fluoride in the form of a prescription toothpaste.

Regarding the swelling at hand post-surgery,follow the recomendations of the surgeon. By next week, barring any complications, you will be good to go.

Looking at your tag cntryboy I assume you haven't been breast feeding. Aside from good hygiene and diet. I would recommend biyearly visits to your dentist. Don't wait till Dr. Jack Daniels has stopped helping you. When your there see if he sees any evidence of you grinding your teeth in your sleep. This causes most of the damage you describe. Also if you are on any long term medication or chemotherapy the affect tooth enamel.

I cut down on sodas, and started using toothpastes and mouthwashes that strengthen enamel.

Well... maybe a little breastfeeding! As to the soft drinks I only indulge every now and then, I also do not drink alcohol at all. And to Oryx, I have never heard or been told of soft teeth either, but it was the only way I had to describe the problems I have. P.S. I don't do dip or snuff or "chaw" or smoke anything.

Use Calcium and Magnesium supplements...Also rinse with salt water and/or Arm & Hammer with water, in the AM and PM...For swelling use Tylenol, for pain use Anbesol and for sensitive teeth use Sensodyne atleast twice a day...Hope this helps
